William M. Matney

UNION, WV – William M. Matney, 81, of Union, passed away Thursday, February 6, 2025, at Cardinal Senior Living in Roanoke, VA.
Willie was a loving husband, father, Paw Paw, and Great Paw Paw. He loved watching his birds out of the window. He would make sure they were well fed year-round. He loved his James Monroe Mavericks. When he was still able, he would be sitting in the same spot on those bleachers every home game. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Willie was preceded in death by his mother and father, Lilah and John Matney; 6 brothers; and 4 sisters. He was the last surviving sibling.
He leaves behind his beautiful wife of almost 60 years, Gaynell Arlene Matney; one daughter, Patricia Shaver (Bill Shaver); three grandchildren, Jessica Neel, Kayla Bryant (Jason Burdette), and Cody Shaver (Ashley Harper); he had six great grandchildren, Brookelynn Neel, Briella Harper, Gage Bryant, Remington Bryant, Kinley Harper, and Jaxson Shaver; he also had many nephews and nieces, but one very special nephew, Arthur Ferrell.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM on Monday, February 10, 2025, at the Groves-Mann Funeral Home in Union, WV, with Pastor James Deskins officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery in Union, WV, with Bill Shaver, Cody Shaver, Duck Ratliff, Mike Deskins, and Jason Burdette serving as pallbearers.
