William E. "Bill" McCarthy, 72, a resident of Chelmsford, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at High Pointe Hospice House in Haverhill surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Sandra (Salter) McCarthy with whom he shared 51 years of marriage.
He was born on October 25, 1951, in Medford, and was the son of the late William C. McCarthy and Lois (Barnett) Roberts.
Bill was raised in North Chelmsford and graduated from Chelmsford High School with the class of 1969. After graduating high school, he was an auto mechanic until he was drafted into the US Army in 1971. He served in Vietnam from 1971 to 1972. After returning home, Bill worked as an auto mechanic for a short time before beginning his career at the Chelmsford Water District where he worked until his passing.
For many years Bill bowled in the Thursday night Duckpin league at the North Chelmsford Duckpin lanes. He was also a huge fan of many different divisions of car racing. He loved to travel, especially to Disney World to go on his favorite ride, It's a Small World. Bill had a heart of gold and would do anything for his family, friends, and even perfect strangers. He was a member of the DAV, the Merrimack Valley Vietnam Veterans, and the American Legion.
In addition to his loving wife, William leaves his son William E. McCarthy, Jr. and his wife Christine; his brother Joseph McCarthy and his wife Lori, his sister Cheri Spurlock, his brother Alvah and his wife Helena Roberts, his sister Elaina Bradley, and his brother Dan Roberts; his granddaughter, Corinne who will be arriving in October, and many nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
He was predeceased by his stepfather, Dan Roberts and his brother-in-law Pat Bradley.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2024, from 5:00-7:00 pm at Blake Chelmsford Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford.
