Dr. William Thomas McLaughlin, known to his many friends as Bill, had a long and charmed life filled with love, family, friends, rewarding work, travel, and always sports. Bill passed away at the age of 93 on August 14, 2025 in Scottsdale, AZ.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA on September 23, 1931 to William Henry McLaughlin and Jane Schneider McLaughlin, Bill grew up with his sister Janie (Warner) and his Aunt Marian Schneider who was like a second mother to him. He lived in Gary, IN for most of his school years.

Football and basketball were favorite activities for Bill at Horace Mann High School. He attended Indiana University at Bloomington and earned a BA in Anatomy and Physiology. He studied medicine for three years at IU in Indianapolis earning an MD degree. He was a member of both Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha scholastic societies as well as the fraternity Phi Gamma Delta. Bill found time for sports, running the 440 for his fraternity. In 1950, he rode in the very first 'Little 500', a 50-mile bicycle race, winning third place.

Bill's medical training continued with an internship at Philadelphia General Hospital where his Aunt Alice had previously been the Chief nurse.

Introduced by his sister Janie to her sorority sister, Marlene Carol Moreno of Oak Park, IL, Bill found love. They married July 5, 1957 and had five children.

As a newlywed, Bill volunteered for the US Army Medical Corps and began two years of active duty service as a Captain. Boot camp was at Fort Sam Houston, TX, on the job training in Radiology was at Fort Leavenworth, KS, then he was assigned as Chief of the Departments of Radiology and Physical Examination at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis, IN.

After his service in the Army Medical Corps, Bill and Marlene moved to Menlo Park, CA for a three-year residency in radiology at Stanford University.

Bill and Marlene decided to stay in California with their growing family, settling in Saratoga.

Bill joined Valley Radiology Medical Group, Inc. and was Chief of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at Santa Clara County Medical Center. His activities were divided between nuclear medicine and diagnostic radiology. During his practice, he served as president of the Northern California Chapter of the Society of Nuclear Medicine, was the founding president of the California Chapter of the American College of Nuclear Physicians, and president of the American Lung Association Chapter of Santa Clara-San Benito Counties.

Bill is survived by his five children and their families. Carrie Akoun, John (Barbara) McLaughlin, David (Tracey) McLaughlin, Kathleen (Dan) Weddle, Patty (Steve) Allen. Grandchildren: Christopher (Charlotte), Michael, Steven Akoun; Kelly, Kate, Laura (Gabrielle) Mayer; Lauren, Brendan, Katherine McLaughlin; Emily Weddle; Ryan, Royce Allen. Bill and Marlene loved to entertain, ballroom dance, play tennis and golf, ski, and vacation at the Alisal Guest Ranch with family. Another passion was to travel, with their favorite destinations in Maui and Mauna Lani, HI, Jackson Hole, WY, France, and other European countries. After Bill retired, they built a new home in Durango, CO.

Bill lost his beloved Marlene in 2001 when she was 69 years old. Thereafter, he settled in Desert Mountain, Scottsdale, AZ.

Fortune smiled on Bill and he found love again having met Janice Roberts at Desert Mountain. He married Jan on March 1, 2008, in Scottsdale, adding her three children, Scott (Sharon), Cindy, and Curt to his family.
