He was a member of Christ Community Church in Wheaton, Illinois. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from College of Charleston, he attended and received his master's from Southern Baptist Seminary, continuing his education he received his PHD from Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey. He served as minister of Clinton Avenue Baptist Church in Trenton, New Jersey and Lake Avenue Baptist Church in Rochester, New York. He served as executive director of American Baptist Assembly in Green Lake, Wisconsin and was a professor at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Lombard, IL.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Colleen Burk Nelson and his parents, Warren Rufus and Alise Rhame Nelson, brothers, Edward Warren Nelson, Thomas Rhame Nelson and sister, Mary Frances Nelson.
He is survived by his children, William Nelson (Cissy) of Richmond, IL, Deborah Homan (Steven) of Louisville, David Nelson (Sandy) of Carol Stream, IL., his grandchildren, Jessica Nelson, Andi Maza (Andrew), Alexis Tranum (Joseph), Korey Nau, Kyle Nau (Lisa), Heidi Ranganathan (T.J.), Amy Lima (Gio), John Nelson and 5 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, November 29, 2025 at the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, 9780 Waddy Road, Waddy KY 40076. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be after 11:00 A.M. until time of service.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery, 9780 Waddy Road, Waddy, KY 40076.
