William R. "Bill" Oehlenschlager Jr., 85, of Wadsworth died Wednesday, June 5, 2024. He was born September 12, 1938, in Conneaut, Ohio to the late William Robert and Evelynn Oehlenschlager.
Bill was a graduate of Youngsville, PA High School, received his Bachelor's Degree from Slippery Rock College and his Master's Degree from Oklahoma University. Bill and his wife, Eunice, moved to Wadsworth in 1962 and have resided there ever since. Bill's vocation was teaching, and he was a natural. He began his career teaching General Science classes at Wadsworth Junior High.
He was at the Junior High for several years before finding his home as a Biology teacher at Wadsworth Senior High School, where he happily spent the last 27 years of his career. During his tenure for Wadsworth City Schools, he also coached a variety of sports from football to girls' tennis, but he was best known for the accomplishments of his track and cross-country teams. Along the way he became known to most within the Wadsworth community as Coach "O". Bill was highly respected as both a teacher and coach, influencing countless students and athletes including his own son and daughter. His efforts earned him numerous teaching awards and a place in the Wadsworth Sports Hall of Fame. Coach "O" was an accomplished athlete in his own right who carried his passion for athletic competition and fitness into the late years of his life. He competed in a multitude of running road races into his 60's and was religious about his daily fitness routine, including plenty of bicycle rides into his 70's. Notably, his fitness journey included the completion of 3 marathons and a 700-mile bicycle expedition. After his retirement from the Wadsworth Schools in 1993, Bill became interested in videography. He merged his new hobby and his passion for sports to produce several seasons of a Clapper Award winning show, "The Sports Scene", for WCTV.
Bill is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Eunice, son Bill (Sherry) and daughter Lori (Kyle) Julien. Bill was grandfather to William "Mitch" (Kristin) Oehlenschlager, Jeremy Oehlenschlager, Grace Julien, Ella Julien and Nathan Julien. Bill is also survived by a great grandson, William "Jack" Oehlenschlager.
The family would like to extend thanks to the staff at The Inn at Coal Ridge, to Harmony Hospice and to Pastor Sarah of First Christian Church. We would also like to thank the many former students who have gone out of their way over the years to let us know the positive impact Coach "O" had on them.
Per Bill's wishes there will be no funeral services.
In lieu of flowers, Bill would be honored by donations to the Friends of the Wadsworth Trails (www.fowt.org ).

I was on the track team in 1969-70. My primary event was High Jumping. Coach O would come to me and say, "you can jump high Steve, just try and take it a bit higher!" I'm already jumping over your head coach!" :-) He was great mentor, Biology teacher, and simply a best friend!

I recently heard about Coach "O"s passing, and offer my condolences to his family. I was fortunate to have Coach "O" as a coach and mentor 1970-1972. Great coach, great person, great teacher.....and although I had not seen him for some time, I carry life long memories of him.

I'm saddened to hear of Bill's passing. My prayer for you as you seek to walk forward in grief, with God by your side, is this: "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit", (Rom. 15:13)

In the spring of 1967 Coach "O" needed a body to run the 1/4 mile in a tri-meet. I was voluntold that I'd be in that race. I finished the race, dead last by quite a bit. Waiting at the finish line was Coach. He walked over to me, put his arm around my shoulders and offered something like..."maybe track is not in your future. Probably should stick with baseball". We both laughed. Deepest sympathies to Coaches family.

I remember I remember coming to your house and you and I would make homemade candy and Bill would sit in his chair in the sunroom and just listen to us you and I carpool together for years at Westfield Insurance back then you were one of my best friends and we spent a lot of time together I am so sorry for your loss I have thought about you several times and wondered how you were doing I knew you had grandchildren and I'm sure you enjoyed them very much

All our thoughts and prayers to Eunice and Billy. You shared a very special person with us, and we are grateful. For all of his students and the young individuals Coach was so loved and respected by, we can´t begin to count all the individual special memories. What we can all say about Coach O was that he always wanted us to do our best. He never demanded our best, he encouraged our best in all our endeavors. Coach O positively affected lives, certainly one of the noblest outcomes of a life well lived

So sad to hear of Coach O´s passing, sending our deepest condolences to the family during this time.
I was not a direct student of Coach O but I´ve known him all of my life. Coach O taught me to catch fireflies in his backyard on family vacation. He encouraged me to step outside of my box and learn to embrace new things when I was the new kid and attending Wadsworth High as a junior. These memories will stay with me forever.
I will never forget the wisdom or kindness she always shared.
