William “Bill” Peele Stubbs, Sr. of Chesterfield, SC died on December 1, 2023. He was born on May 14, 1933 to the late James and Mamie Quick Stubbs of McColl, SC and was the husband to Margery Goforth Stubbs. A Celebration of Life service will be 3:00 PM Sunday, December 10, 2023 at St. Paul United Methodist Church by Pastor Alisha Hansen with a reception to follow in the church fellowship hall. A private burial will be held at a later date.
Bill was one of eight siblings that were a blessing and support to him. He graduated from McColl High School in 1951. He was given the chance to further his education at Presbyterian College, when he received a music scholarship with the Presbyterian College Choir. He graduated with the BS in Elementary Education in 1960. Later, he gained his Master’s Degree in Administration from Western Carolina.
Bill met Margery Goforth on a double date in Columbia. They started dating and later, married on August 21, 1960 in Columbia. They resided early in McColl, SC on the Stubbs family farm. The family moved to Chesterfield in 1973 with their three children and his mother, Mamie Q. Stubbs.
Bill worked as a Social Studies teacher at Bennettsville Elementary. He was also a principal at the Bennettsville Elementary, before becoming Headmaster at Marlboro Academy and a coach at Marlboro Academy for the girls’ basketball team. When his family moved to Chesterfield, he became the Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools. He continued in this position until he retired on June 30, 1994. Later, he was co-Headmaster at Marlboro Academy with his friend John Jones.
Bill liked to stay active in the community. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He sang as a bass in the Chancel Choir. He was active with their Sunday School class and the United Methodist Men. He also worked with several committees in the church and in the county, like The Gideons, Sandhills Emmaus, Tri-County Mental Health Board and many more. He especially loved working at the Red Bird Mission in Kentucky with the UMC group. He worked on upgrading homes in impoverished areas and spreading God’s love for everyone. Bill didn’t just say that he was a Christian but he also put his love for his Lord into action.
Bill’s love of music kept him involved in the Marlboro Arts Council and Hometown. He performed in several musicals with his beloved Marlboro friends. Marlboro County and the people in it had a special place in his heart. He and his late wife, Margery, enjoyed attending musicals, plays and performances throughout the region.
His favorite activity was being around family and friends. Family reunions and gatherings near the holidays were an exciting part of his life. He liked telling jokes to make people smile. He especially loved ALL of the desserts that were available.
Survivors include sons, William “Bill” Stubbs, Jr. and wife, Diane of Columbia, James “Jim” Stubbs and wife, Sara of Stallings, NC; daughter, Elizabeth “Beth” Stubbs Hough and husband, Austin of Chesterfield; grandchildren, William Stubbs, Emily Stubbs, Jenna Hough and Ethan Hough; sister, Jacque S. McLellan of Lexington; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margery Goforth Stubbs, and his siblings, Raymond Stubbs, Eula S. Gulick, Elizabeth “Lib” S. Steen, Becky S. Lane, Frances S. Watson and Marion Stubbs.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul UMC 305 W. Main St. Chesterfield, SC 29709 or to Chesterfield County Administrators Association (CCAA) and mail to Beth Hough PO Box 8 Chesterfield, SC 29709. CCAA gives scholarships to future education students.
