William Scott "Bill" Shaw, 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at the Memorial Hospital/Skilled Nursing Unit in
Towanda, Pa. Born on July 26, 1933, in Towanda, Bill was the seventh of eight children of William Henry Shaw and Helen Louise (Stephenson) Shaw.
A 1953 graduate of Towanda Area High School, Bill was an active and proud member of the school community. He served as captain of the varsity football team, played basketball, and participated in the Letterman's Club. From a young age, he worked hard to support his family, spending ten years delivering newspapers for the Towanda Daily Review following the death of his father. After high school, Bill worked as a projectionist at the Wysox Drive-In Theater before beginning a long and dedicated career at GTE Sylvania in Towanda. He served as a Lab Technician for nearly forty years, retiring in 1991.
In 1953, Bill married Beverly Faith Dixon of
Monroeton, Pa. The couple raised three children where they resided in Monroeton Borough for several years. He was an accomplished entrepreneur who founded Manufacturer's Furniture Outlet, and succeeded
in other business and real estate venues in the Towanda-Monroeton area. At an earlier age he had an interest in leadership roles/politics and dedicated many volunteer hours to make our communities a better place to live. He was always readily available to help those in need. Bill served on the Towanda Water and Sewer Authority and was instrumental in getting public sewer and natural gas in Monroeton Borough. He was a past Secretary/Treasurer of the Pennsylvania Council of Governments, and a member of the Monroeton Borough Council for over 65 years where he served as Chairman for 50 plus years. He received the Charles F. Leedecker Award for his 50 plus years of service with the Borough Council, and the Paul Santangelo Award for 60 years of serving on the council. Bill was a member of the Monroeton United Methodist Church (where he served as a Board Chairman), served as Chairman of the Monroeton Borough Cemetery Association for over 50 years, served on the Monroeton Fire Department and Police Commission. He also coached baseball for the Towanda Little League, and served as a Pennsylvania
Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) referee in both football and basketball throughout the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania. Bill was a member and past chairman of the Bradford County Young Republicans and an elected member of the Bradford County
Republican Committee, he was a member and past President of the GTE Sylvania Men's Club, a member and past Chairman of the GTE Sylvania Quarter Century Club, past Chairman of the Towanda School District Parent Teacher Association (PTA), and a 60-year member of the Blue Lodge, Union Wyalusing Lodge 108, Free and Accepted Masons in
Towanda, PA; the Northern Commandery No. 16 Knights Templar and Royal Arch Chapter Number 16.
Bill enjoyed family reunions, good music, and visiting his favorite local restaurants. He was an enthusiastic fan of Penn State football, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Syracuse University basketball. He also loved to travel, especially when it meant spending time in Davenport or Zephyrhills, Florida.
Bill is survived by his children Lisa Brown and husband Richard of French Asylum
Pa, Scott A. Shaw and wife Deborah of Horseheads, New York and Mark S. Shaw
and wife Reva of
Towanda, Pa; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Bill was predeceased by siblings, Eleanor Ackley, Phyllis McNutt, William Matthew Shaw,
Janet Allyn, Beverly Coldiron, Howard Shaw, Jack Shaw, and grandson Devon Shaw in 2013.
A celebration of Bill's life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at the Monroeton United Methodist Church, 53 Church Street,
Monroeton, Pa, with Pastor Michael Bentz officiating. A luncheon will be provided at the church after the service. All are welcome to attend. Memorial donations in memory of Bill can be made to a
