William David Shurkey

William David Shurkey, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on May 3, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan, William grew up as the beloved son of the late William and Thelma Shurkey. William's life was a testament to dedication, love, and service.

William attended Mackenzie High School in Detroit, Michigan, laying the foundation for his lifelong love of learning. His academic journey continued at Eastern Michigan University, where he graduated and prepared for a life of imparting knowledge and skills to others.

Before embarking on his civilian career, William proudly served his country as a U.S. Marine. He then transitioned to a fulfilling career as a teacher and a programmer, where he continued to influence and inspire those around him.

On August 29, 1959, William married the love of his life, Donna, at Gratiot Park Methodist Church in Port Huron. Their union was blessed with three wonderful children: Kathleen R. Pate, William P. Shurkey, and Barry C. Shurkey. The family grew to include five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and so many honorary grandchildren who called him "Grandpa". William's grandchildren were the center of his world. William also leaves behind many nephews and nieces whom he loved dearly. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Kirk and Cheryll who provided exceptional care and love for William during his last years.

William's interests were diverse. He was an avid traveler, found joy in woodworking, volunteered at local schools, and collected sports cards. Above all though, William's life reflected his love for his family. He was a constant presence at family gatherings and any occasion that brought his loved ones together.

William David Shurkey's life was a journey of joy, learning, and love. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered as a man who lived fully and loved deeply.

A celebration of William's life will be held on Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at Grace Memorial Life Celebration Center, 4521 Ravenswood Road, Kimball, MI 48074, with a visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. The memorial service will begin 11:00 a.m. Inurnment and military honors will follow at Lakeside Cemetery in Port Huron.
