William Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 8, 2025.
William "Bill" Smith, 79, peacefully passed away on August 21, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born on February 28, 1946, in McKeansburg, Pennsylvania, to Roy Smith and Edith (Wagner) Smith-Stamm. After graduating from Blue Mountain High School, Bill was drafted into the United States Army in 1965 during the Vietnam War, where he served stateside for several years. Following his military service, he built a 35–year career in the floor covering industry, which included being a successful small business owner of Country Carpet in Fogelsville, PA. On September 14, 1968, he married his sweetheart, Jean, and together they raised two sons and were blessed with four grandchildren. Bill's life was marked by devotion to his family, hard work, kindness toward others, and a lighthearted sense of humor. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he was especially passionate about baseball and softball, dedicating 35 years as a respected semi-professional softball umpire. After retirement, Bill and Jean moved from Pennsylvania to Indiana, where he enjoyed painting, cheering for his favorite sports teams, and any activity that included his grandkids. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Jim, Kenny, and Donald. He is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years, Jean; his sons Brian and his wife Sarah, and Stephen and his wife Kerri; his grandchildren Nathan, Isaac, Colby, and Melodie; his siblings Mary Jane Loy and her husband Dale, Ruth Ann Klinger, and Marty and his wife Candy, along with several nephews and nieces. The immediate family will gather for a private graveside memorial service in the coming week. Instead of flowers, contributions in memory of Bill can be given to Mercy Inc.
