William Mather Stapleton, Jr., age 80, of Milan, Georgia passed away peacefully at his residence surrounded by his loving family on June 6, 2025.
Graveside Services will be held at Sandgrove Baptist Church Cemetery on Monday, June 9th at 11:00 am. with Rev. Bennie Moore officiating.
Mather attended High School in Milan where he was a member of the Milan Red Devils Basketball team which he dearly loved. He graduated from High School in 1963 and immediately went to work for the Seaboard Coastline Railroad (CSX) as a conductor/trainman. He worked for 28 years in this position. He then became the State Legislative Director for the United Transportation Union representing the railroad workers of the State of Georgia. He spent 8 years at the Georgia State Capitol lobbying for the interests of the railroad workers in Georgia. Mather thoroughly enjoyed his life and career as a trainman and union lobbyist. He also loved his community of Milan and was a member of Milan Baptist Church and the Milan Lions Club. Mather loved helping people. Mather is preceded in death by his parents William Mather Stapleton, Sr and Eber Rue Seay Stapleton and brother Johnny Stapleton.
Mather is survived by the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Catherine Edwina Maloy Stapleton. Mather and Edwina spent 65 blessed years together. Mather was a loving and dedicated father to his four surviving children, Stacey Stapleton Davis of Milan, Pam Gilbert (Johnny) of Chester, Bill Stapleton (Felecia) of Eastman, and Janet Stapleton of Eastman. He was affectionately known as "Papa" to his five surviving grandchildren, Hannah Davis of Eastman, Hunter Davis of Milan, Josh Gilbert of Chester, Anna Margret Stapleton and Will Stapleton both of Eastman, and Misty Gilbert Sapp (Brad) of Chester; four great-grandchildren, Andyana Williams, Lola Mincey, Millie Willams and Zeplin Williams. He is also survived by his sisters, Wanda Mixon (Carrel) and Dean Clements both of Abbeville, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
