William H. Starr III better known as Harvey, 76, passed away on October 19 th , 2025 at home in Slaterville Springs, NY.
He was born on June 23,1949 in Ithaca, NY to William H. Starr II and Florence Armstrong Starr. Harvey was a proud lifetime member of the Slaterville Springs community. He graduated from Ithaca High School in 1967 and enlisted in the US Navy shortly afterwards. Harvey served his country from 1967-1971 and was a proud Vietnam Veteran. He was a Flight Mechanic on VW1 P3 Orion flying weather reconnaissance missions from Guam and Danang, Vietnam.
Harv worked for many years at Seneca Supply after coming home from the military. He then went on to work at Economy Paving in Cortland, NY where he was the Heavy Equipment Director for many more years. After retiring from Economy, he worked at Cornell University Alumni Affairs until retiring from there. His second retirement job was as the Locksmith at Cayuga Medical Center. Once he finally retired from that position he has continued to volunteer at CMC greeting people at the front desk. He loved staying busy, being social and helping people. In his spare time, he liked to collect old pocket watches, fix antique clocks, and he always had a classic old car in the barn that he was working on.
Harvey was an active member of his community, volunteering at the Caroline Town Library, Slaterville Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company, and a member of the Caroline Town Council. He was also a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America 377 and participated in many events. He was always there to lend a helping hand wherever he was needed.
He is survived by his wife Virginia “Ginny” Starr, daughters Laurie Starr and Terri Starr; Son in law Andrew Dean; granddaughters Lillian Dean and Jillian Smith; his sister Flori (Neb) Hage; Nephews John (Juliana) Hage and Jason (Jamie) Hage; nieces Carrie (Scott) Turcsik, Danielle (Brian) Latham and Dixie (Daren) Conklin; as well as many great grand nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Julee Starr Dean and his parents Harvey and Florence Starr.
On Tuesday October 28 th at 1:00pm there will be a graveside service with full military honors at Brookton Cemetery which is located at the corner of Landon Road and Lounsberry Road in Brooktondale, NY, followed by a reception at Brooktondale Fire Department. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Slaterville Fire Department or the Brooktondale Fire Department.
