William "Bill" Fairbanks Steinmetz, 85, of Brookhaven, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2025. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Bill lived a life marked by creativity, dedication, and unwavering love for his family and craft.
Born on November 2, 1939, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Bill spent his formative years in the Keystone State. He graduated from Upper Darby High School but often fondly recalled his time attending Hollidaysburg High School-memories that remained close to his heart throughout his life.
Bill's professional journey was one of remarkable commitment and artistry. For 42 years, he served as a staff photographer for the Philadelphia Inquirer. His keen eye and passion for storytelling through images earned him numerous accolades and saw many of his photographs grace the front page of the newspaper. Beyond his photographic achievements, Bill was a dedicated advocate for his colleagues as a Shop Steward for The Newspaper Guild. His leadership and integrity left a lasting impact on those who worked alongside him.
Outside of work, Bill was a man of many talents and interests. A gifted craftsman, he found joy in wood working, model building, and stained glass artistry-creating pieces that reflected both precision and imagination. He also cherished time spent outdoors fishing and hunting. In his younger years, Bill had a zest for life that shone through in his love of skiing, waterskiing and dancing; he often reminisced with pride about being the best dancer at school.
Bill's faith was an integral part of his life. As a frequent visitor of Middletown Church, he found strength and community in worship. His spiritual devotion guided him in all aspects of life and was evident in the kindness and generosity he extended to others.
Bill's warmth and affection extended to his four-legged companions as well. He had a special bond with his Shih Tzus-his beloved Stella and Ruby.
Above all else, Bill was deeply committed to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife Caryn Lott Steinmetz; daughters Kimberly Steinmetz and Cindi Steinmetz; sons Mark Steinmetz (Amy), Erik Steinmetz (Debbie), and Sean Steinmetz (Alexis); and step-daughter, Jennifer Michaelsen. Affectionately known as 'Pop-Pop with the Beard,' his legacy also lives on through his five grandchildren, Evan, Ryan, Nathan, Adriane, and Gavin, who brought him immense pride and joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Ellen Steinmetz, as well as his sister, Patricia Steinmetz.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 am on Friday, October 10, with a funeral service following at Middletown Church, 273 S. Old Middletown Road,
Media, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Tunnel to Towers (https://t2t.org/) in his honor.
Bill will be remembered as a loving husband and father whose passion for photography captured not only moments, but emotions; as a craftsman whose hands built lasting beauty; and as a man whose laughter and stories once filled rooms with joy. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
