William Sutton Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home - Tidewater Drive Chapel on Mar. 18, 2026.
William Fleming Sutton 82, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Sentara Virginia Beach Hospital Saturday February 28, 2026 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

William was born on December 24, 1943 in Westville, Florida Holmes County to William and Sula Sutton. He graduated from Holmes County High School in 1960. He proudly served in the United States Navy starting 1960 while in New Orleans, Louisiana until his retirement on July 18, 1980 as Chief Petty Officer.

On June 26, 1965 he married Gloria Lucille Plos, and together they built a life filled with love, hard work, challenges that made the relationship stronger, and a great devotion to his family. They were blessed with three children; Travis, Dan, and Brian Sutton who remained a constant source of pride, joy, and sacrifice throughout his life.

William was a devout husband, father, and grandfather. No matter the challenges and struggles he had between navy deployments his family stayed strong. His wife Gloria gave him the strength to help his family until his return. He enjoyed teaching his children to fish, learn to camp in the woods, and complete home improvement projects. He worked hard as a cashier with ExxonMobil, worked as a night auditor at the Diplomat and Viking Motels in Virginia Beach, Virginia, worked at norshipco as an electronic technician, and worked at the Pentagon.

He always enjoyed seeing his children and grandchildren taking on new projects of learning like music, and even enjoyed hearing them hit wrong notes. He loved to share his knowledge with playing the organ, cooking, and understanding the computer. His time was always limited by his career choices, but his family always had a father who took the time to prepare them for the days ahead. He received an associate degree in Advanced Science at Tidewater Community College in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Our parents gave all their children and grandchildren the best they had especially love. He loved electronics, studying math, studying and researching family genealogy, and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and his many siblings to teach them the knowledge he had.

William is survived by son Dan Sutton and Fiancé Gloria Hogge; son, Brian Sutton and Marti Bede; granddaughters, Ashley and Katie Sutton; sister, Jean and Husband Ken Wright, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

William is preceded in death by his loving wife Gloria L. Sutton of fifty years, his parents William" Henry" Sutton and Susie R. "Sula" Flowers, his son William "Travis" Sutton, sister Dollie Bell Dawson(Blountstown,FL.), sister Charlie Etta Kilpatrick(Sturgis,MI.), sister Mavis Maynell Duckworth(Tampa,FL.), sister Rossie Elizabeth Acquisto(Omaha,NE.), niece Johnnie Lou Dawson(Blountstown,FL.), and nephew Charles Ray Winston Dawson.

A graveside service will be held at Princess Anne Memorial Park 1110 North Great Neck Road in Virginia Beach, Virginia on Thursday March 26, 2026 at 2:00 pm. Flowers are welcome only at the funeral.
