William Travis

William Joseph Travis passed away on December 31, 2025, at the age of 85 in the care of his daughter Patty and his good friend Shawn Zug. Joe was born on May 3, 1940, in Johnson County, Ky, to the late Estill Travis S. and Montana Daniels Travis Ward.

Joe served his country honorably in the National Guard, the Navy, and the United States Army, from which he received full retirement. After retirement, he was a self-employed 'honest' mechanic, using all his knowledge of engines and cars. He worked on cars, owning his own shop, Desert Diesel, for several years. Upon closing the business, he did many "free" break jobs and car maintenance for his family and friends out of his home garage. He eventually gave up the wrenches for his golf clubs and enjoyed playing with his friends, family, and his especially his great-grandson Ryan Mead. Joe lived a life centered on service and compassion. In Albuquerque, Joe dedicated countless hours to supporting individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS. Alongside his beloved wife, Jean, he volunteered at the NMAS food bank, where they provided groceries for those whose medications were prohibitively expensive, ensuring they had access to essential food. Together, they made sure people felt cared for, especially during the holidays. They organized community donations and donated their own money to make sure clients had Thanksgiving and Christmas meals.

In recognition of their dedication, the food bank was renamed the Joe & Jean Travis Food Bank, a testament to the love and care they bestowed upon their community. Joe was also involved with the NAMES Project, AIDS Memorial Quilt. He and Jean brought Quilt panels into schools and community events, helping educate others, honor those lost, and reduce stigma-always with compassion and respect at the center. Those who knew Joe will always cherish his country humor. He had a knack for making people laugh with clever jokes or witty remarks. He could lighten even the darkest moments with a smile or a chuckle. His humor, combined with his warm and caring nature, created a sense of comfort and belonging for everyone around him. Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, and his sons, Robbie Travis and Michael King, his brothers, James Travis, Estill Travis Jr. sisters Herma Lee Price, Anna Louise Carver, and Eastalene Petrey.

He is survived by his daughters, Sheila Swafford and her husband Mark, and Patty King and her husband Dave Ellin, many nephews and nieces, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Joe lived a life centered on service and compassion, and he will be remembered for the care, humor, and heart he shared so freely with those around him.

Memorial service and interment will take place on Friday, February 13, 2026 at 2:30 pm at Mount Calvary Cemetery 1900 Edith Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87102. There will be a reception following at 3901 Smith Ave SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108.
