Bill was born in Detroit to William and Veronica (nee Kelly) Walker. He was raised along with his older sister, Ann and younger sister, Wendy in what was then northern Farmington Township (now Farmington Hills). He loved North Farmington and never strayed long nor far. It was an ideal time and place to grow up. Farmlands were converted dramatically and rapidly into suburban neighborhoods with sufficient fields, woods, creeks, ponds, abandoned barns and silos for young adventurers to explore. Kids were everywhere. In the dead of summer, you could field an entire team for pick-up baseball. You walked, rode and hitchhiked alone with impunity. This was America's high-water mark. Our wealth and freedoms were unimaginable to the rest of the world. We were invincible and anything, even the moon, was possible.
Bill was a good athlete ("I get better over time!") and gifted student. He loved school, but mostly as a social platform. His favorite classes were gym, study hall and lunch. A voracious reader, he acquired the ability and confidence to teach himself and preferred to learn privately. Teachers, classmates and colleagues described him as "brilliant"; "I fooled a lot of people," he would say.
Before starting his residency, Bill independently and intensely studied anesthesiology in addition to his required class work. On the written examination given annually to all anesthesia residents in the country, Bill scored highest among his fellow residents and received one of the highest scores in the country - before starting the 3-year residency! When informed by his department chairman of the result, he asked, "Which ones did I miss?" Rumors of cheating were dispelled following intensive interviews with department administrators. Bill put it this way: "I could teach myself the science; my attending anesthesiologists would teach me the practice."
Professionally, Bill held positions of increasing clinical responsibility and in medical education and department administration, chairing various committees and serving as division or department chief. He is most proud of his time at Oakwood Hospital, Dearborn, Michigan, where, as chief of Cardiac Anesthesia, Bill, along with fellow physicians Bruce Washington, MD (cardiac surgeon), Paul Hayden, MD (intensivist) and Samir Dabous, MD (cardiologist) began Oakwood's hugely successful program in cardiac surgery.
Bill's interests included physical fitness, water skiing, and computers. He was an expert blackjack player, just not good enough to be banned from the Strip. Although not a mathematician, he understood statistics to the point of intuitively solving complex problems in his head. As a physician, since all clinical decisions involve weighing relative risks, he was a practiced, inveterate gambler!
In retirement he became a highly motivated, immensely untalented DIY-guy seduced by the Internet and YouTube into projects of wiring, plumbing, appliance-repairing, etc. The horror....
Bill is survived by his sister, Ann Walker; his devoted and remarkable former wife, Gina Walker; their wonderful children, Erin Nakayama (Edward) and Amanda Walker, and his precious grandchildren, Eva and Julian, who he loved with his whole heart. He is also survived by his loving extended family, Mary and Roger Basse; Christie and Christopher Galli; Susan Diehl and Mike Rivenburgh; and George and Cynthia (Schoen) Mashour. His parents and younger sister, Wendy, predecease him.
A private burial will take place at North Farmington Cemetery.

You knew you were going to have a great day if you working with Dr. Walker! As a CRNA, I worked with him mostly in the Suite and West Bloomfield. He was a great anesthesiologist and a wonderful person overall. He was synonymous with the Mrs. Walker cheesecake! Dr. Walker always made sure to ask how my son and husband were doing. He loved talking about my husband´s classic car. When I was first diagnosed with hypertension, we were working together in the Suite. I was wearing an ice pack on my forehead by the end of the day. He insisted on taking my blood pressure after I dropped off my last patient of the day. My blood pressure was so high that he determined I was having a hypertensive crisis. Dr. Walker made sure to treat my blood pressure and get it down before sending me to the E.R. He was afraid that it would take a while before the E.R. doctor could see me and didn´t want me to possibly have a stroke. I had a 2 year old son at the time. He was a selfless man. I am forever grateful for him. Rest in peace my friend.

I LOVED working with Dr. Walker! I am so saddened to hear of his passing. His wife made the most INCREDIBLE cheese cake ever! I asked for her to make one for me for my birthday. He brought it in and I was told by staff that others were eating it. So I went tonthe lunchroom to grab some to take home with me. People were like you know that this was a joke. He had ANOTHER one in the fridge....oh his humor. He was a great MDA...prayers for him and his family...

Dr. Walker was a great doctor, respected by everyone and treated everyone like a friend. He was a character and would play jokes on his fellow coworkers. We always knew we would have a great day when he was assigned to our room! Dr. Walker will surely be missed by all that know him! I know he really loved his family! We all loved the famous Walker cheesecake! Thank you Mrs. Walker!

Dr. Walker was an excellent MDA!! He took his job seriously, but also had a a funny side- this took some time knowing him to see it He cared about all of us in the Suite- brought us the "famous Walker cheesecakes" (thank you Mrs. Walker) as evidence that he loved us!
We loved him just as much, and will miss him terribly! Rest In Peace, Dr. Walker

Few will hold Bill Walker in higher regards than I do.

My son, Mark, would spend time shooting at the local gun range with Bill, and that could only happen because he saved my wife Suzanne´s life - a few years before Mark was even born.

I had worked with Bill for many years, as he was one of the Lead Anesthesiologists in charge Oakwood Hospital´s ICU. He was both revered (and feared) by his Anesthesia Residents. I appreciated his education as one of the instructors the first time I became ACLS Certified to work as a pharmacist in that fast-paced environment. He was good at, and he liked the role of teacher. I was grateful he was the Anesthesiologist available when Suzanne was in crisis at the time of or first-born daughter´s birth. Prior to Bill´s arrival, we weren´t´ seeing a good path unfold until he provided a more experienced solution.

Decades later, both Bill and I had moved through dozens of roles in and outside of Oakwood. We were re-acquainted at my soon-to-be Daughter-in-Law´s 21st birthday (Caroline Galli, who we were about to learn is Bill Walker´s Niece). Suzanne and I were invited to her family´s home to celebrate the big occasion. On approach to their house, I noted a familiar face from years earlier. During the celebration, I re introduced Suzanne to Bill as the DR who saved her life during Nicole´s birth. The family overheard my exuberance and all in the family now know of my reverence for Bill.

In your passing, you and your family are certainly aware that I will always have a special place in my heart for your memory.

Rest in Peace, Bill Walker.

Karl and Suzanne Widak - now celebrating 42 years of marriage.
