Willie Houseal Obituary Today, we honor the life of Mrs. Willie L. Houseal, age 102, affectionately known as 'Mrs. Willie L,' who walked faithfully under the care of the Good Shepherd, departed this life on Thursday, January 30, 2025. Mrs. Willie L was born on September 24, 1922, in Prosperity, South Carolina, she was the beloved daughter of the late Maggie Lee Holman Bookman and Rufus Reeves.
Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. She accepted Christ at an early age at Mt. Hebron A.M.E Church where she not only nurtured her spiritual growth but also showcased her athleticism as a member of the church-league basketball team. She later became a steadfast and devoted member of St. Paul A.M.E Church where she was the mother of the church and served in many capacities throughout the years. Even at 102 years old, she continued to share her signature voice in song, a sound cherished by all who knew her. Whether lifting her voice in praise or joyfully playing her tambourine, her music was a testament to her unwavering faith and vibrant spirit, touching the hearts of those around her.
Mrs. Willie L grew up during a pivotal time in American history, experiencing firsthand the effects of the post-Civil War Reconstruction, segregation, and the economic hardships of the South. As a young girl, she worked in the cotton fields, a testament to the resilience and determination that would define her life. Seeking greater opportunities, she and her husband took part in "The Great Migration," moving their family from South Carolina to Knoxville, Tennessee, and later to Brooklyn, New York.
A woman of remarkable strength and vision, Mrs. Willie L was a dedicated businesswoman who, alongside her husband, owned and operated several businesses, including Freds Party Shop and a gas station in Little Mountain, South Carolina, a landscaping and masonry business in Brooklyn, N.Y., and a beloved neighborhood convenience store in Knoxville, TN. Her entrepreneurial spirit and tireless work ethic left an enduring impact on her family.
In addition to her business ventures, Mrs. Willie L was a talented seamstress with a particular gift for making beautiful hats. Her craftsmanship was admired by many, and her creations became cherished pieces within her community. Beyond her craftsmanship, she was very politically engaged, serving as a poll worker and a dedicated advocate for voter outreach and engagement. She played a critical role in ensuring African Americans in Little Mountain, SC had access to the ballot, championing civic participation and the fundamental right to vote.
On September 28, 1940, she married the love of her life, the late Fred Houseal. Together, they built a beautiful life and a legacy of entrepreneurship, faith, and family. Their union was blessed with five childrenfour sons who preceded her in death Mr. Freddie Houseal (the late Dorothy), Sr., Robert Houseal, Clifton Houseal, and Glenn Houseal and her devoted daughter, Mrs. Nina Houseal Bowers (Gregory). She also lovingly embraced three bonus children, the late Dorothy and Earnestine Houseal and the late Beamon Boyd.

Mrs. Willie Ls legacy is one of faith, family, and perseverance. her devoted daughter Mrs. Nina Houseal Bowers (Gregory); 36 grandchildren, including Mr. Clifton Houseal, Jr., who was reared in the home, 60 great-grandchildren, 48 great-great-grandchildren, two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Kathleen Houseal and Mrs. Angelette Houseal, extended family, and friends who will forever cherish her wisdom, strength, and unwavering love.
Though she has left this earthly home, her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. She has fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 at 2:00 pm at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Chapin, South Carolina. Burial will follow at St. Paul A. M. E. Church, Pomaria, South Carolina. Public viewing will be on Monday, February 3, 2025 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Fred B. Pratt Memorial Chapel.
