Willie Stone, Jr., 77, passed away September 25, 2024.
Willie was born in Harrisburg, Illinois on February 24, 1947, one of ten children of Willie Stone and Thelma Penrod Stone. He was predeceased by James, Alberta, Marilyn Kay, and Ann. Surviving are Wanda, June, Naomi, Bobby and Cindy.
Willie, who was known as Bill by his family, attended grade school in Dorisville. In high school, he played basketball and football, and set a record for the mile run, which stood at the high school for many years. After graduation, he spent four years in the Air Force, including a year in Vietnam. He attended Southern Illinois University, and Southeastern Illinois College.
He graduated from George Washington University with a degree in physical education and began a 30 year career as a teacher with the Loudoun County Virginia school system, most of which was spent at Sterling Middle School. He worked as a high school football official for several years and played basketball with friends. His best memories were of the golf games and outings with Bill Harvey, Wes Walters and the rest of the group. His yard was his happy place and he loved to pass along trees and plants to other gardeners.
He married Carol Czerwinski in 1972 and they had 52 happy years together, spending time at Lake Anna, vacationing at the Outer Banks, and traveling the country. He was proud of his sons Nate and Matt, who took great care of him as his health declined. He was glad that Nate found a caring wife in Angela. Always at the top of his list were his grandchildren: Katie, Aidan and Wyatt. They were his treasure and brightened his life in so many ways.
The staff at Virginia Cancer Specialists Alexandria did a wonderful job caring for him during his three years of treatment for cancer.
A celebration of life will be held on October 26. Please contact family for details.

Willie and I started life on opposite sides of the Ohio River, maybe 50 miles apart. His dad was a coal miner-fisherman, my granddad raised cattle and farmed. He fought in the Vietnam War, I protested against that war. When we got to know one-another we talked about our experiences. Then we taught together for 19 years and played together for 46 years. A Palestinian author recently wrote that he had "lost all tangible evidence of my memories". I feel that a little. I definitely lost someone to tell me I got it all wrong. We were both raised in a place where your friends show up when there is need. Willie was like that, he was a good friend. Bill Harvey

Willie taught PE at SMS when I was there as an AP and Principal. He rarely wrote children up for discipline. He would walk the child up to my office and in a very low key, soft spoken voice explain that the child had such potential he couldn't understand why he would misbehave. I would then ask the child why he decided to do what he did....the child would be so taken aback by Willie's soft spoken demeanor and compliment he couldn't speak. He would apologize to Willie and the incident was taken care of and Willie had a friend for life. I loved his approach. Willie loved my spicy grits dish and requested it for all our all day lunches at SMS......he will be missed. My sympathies to all the family.
