Winfred Hugh Shytle, 98, departed from this world on Friday, Oct. 11, 2024 at Givens Highland Farms embraced by family. He kept a positive, happy and grateful attitude throughout most of his health struggles during the past several years and touched the lives of those around him with kindness and respect.
Winfred was born on July 23, 1926 in Columbus, NC to Merle Livingston Shytle and Inez Henrietta Painter Shytle. During World War II, he served in the South Pacific on Okinawa aboard the aircraft carrier, The USS Bon Homme Richard. He was passionate about gardening and feeding his family healthy food. He also enjoyed building and flying model airplanes, playing the piano and art classes.
After the death of his third wife, he moved to Black Mountain near his daughter and attended St. James Episcopal Church. He participated in many activities at the Senior Center and around town with his sweetheart Carolyn Williams. Whenever he encountered someone in need, he readily offered them assistance. Winfred is survived by: his children, Sharon Sells (Don), Renae Brame (Jamie), Gary Shytle and Celeste Tolbert (Jim); eleven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren, beloved nieces and nephews, his siblings Teresa Edney (Boonie) and ML Shytle (Rana).
