Winfred Vaughn, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and respected community member, passed away on Friday, March 6, 2026, at the age of 86 in Gallatin, Tennessee. Born on July 28, 1939, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Winfred M. Vaughn and Mary Rebecca Tomlinson Vaughn. He lived a life marked by service, dedication, and unwavering faith.
Winfred's early years were spent in Murfreesboro, where he attended Central High School, graduating with the class of 1957. Following his formative education, he proudly served his country in the United States Marines from 1957 to 1963, demonstrating a commitment to his nation that he carried with him throughout his life.
Following his military service, Winfred pursued a career in the insurance business before joining the JC Penney Company. His dedication and hard work led to his promotion as manager of the JC Penney store in 1973, a role he fulfilled with great passion for 24 years until his retirement in 1997.
Winfred was not only known for his professional achievements; he was also a committed member of his community. He was a member of the Rotary Club and held a deep connection to the Hartsville Pike Church of Christ, where he served as an elder for 42 years. His contributions to the church extended beyond leadership; Winfred regularly led singing and taught Bible school classes, inspiring countless individuals with his devotion and wisdom. Those who knew him remarked on his character, describing him as a Christian husband and father who never spoke negatively of anyone.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son David Miles Vaughn.
In addition to his professional and community involvement, Winfred cherished his family and loved traveling. He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Nancy Sloan Vaughn; his daughters, Nancy Wynn Vaughn Graves (Kent) and Cindy Vaughn Shaw (Larry); his grandchildren, Brandon Graves, Gretchen Graves Hill (Rocky), Erin Shaw Shearon (Jeff), Brad Shaw, and Bryson Shaw (Paige); and his great-grandchildren, Braxton Miles Hill, Grayce Hill, Deacon Graves, and Brooklyn Graves.
