Woody A. Garland

Woody A. Garland, 80, of Greenwood, Indiana passed away November 3, 2024, in Indianapolis. He was born on April 16, 1944, to the late Woodrow and Alma (Dunford) Garland in Indianapolis. 

Woody graduated from Howe High School in 1962, where he ran cross country and track. Upon graduating, he attended Indiana University for two years, receiving an associate degree. Woody worked at Allison Transmission, a division of General Motors, for over 30 years before retiring at age 54. Woody was always a coach for his daughter Amy's Pee Wee and Lassie Little League softball as well as basketball. He also volunteered at Center Grove when Amy was on the track team. He was always passionate about lifting weights and after retirement, he loved working at the Ardizzone & Nalley gym where he made many lifelong friends. He was a member of the Center United Methodist Church for over 50 years serving in many leadership roles over the years including construction of the Great Hall, as a lay leader and sharing his faith and the word of God. Woody will be deeply missed. His kindness, humor, quick witted personality and willingness to help others, and genuine nature made him a truly special person. The impact he had on our lives will never be forgotten.  

He is survived by his wife Linda Garland; daughter, Amy Garland; Granddaughters, Olivia, and Tess; Great-Grandson and namesake, Woodrow; and sibling, Judy (Don) Kingery and many nieces and nephews. 

Woody's proudest accomplishment was marrying Linda L. Pottorff on August 29, 1965 and was blessed 5 years later with their only child Amy, and several years later, 2 granddaughters, Oliva and Tess Albertson and most recently with a great grandson, Woodrow. They had 59 years together. Their union was filled with love and mutual respect.  Woody was a devoted husband, Dad, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa and most importantly, a man of God and has gone home to be with the Lord.

Memorial visitation is Saturday, November 23, 2024, 10:00 am until 11:30 am at Center Church, 5445 Bluff Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46217. Celebration of Life Service will begin at 11:30 am.
