Xubing Xia, age 55, passed away surrounded by family on August 9, 2022 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Xubing was born in Nanjing, China on August 29, 1966 to the late Zhide Xia and Suzheng Ma. He grew up in Nanjing alongside his two sisters, Xufang Ma and Xufei Ma, and later attended Nanjing University, graduating in 1989 with a bachelor's degree in physical chemistry. After graduation, Xubing stayed at Nanjing University to conduct research and earn a master's degree in chemistry. While a master's student, he co-published a paper in the journal Polyhedron and met his wife Ju Huang, whom he married in 1992.
In 1993, Xubing moved to the United States to begin a doctoral program in inorganic chemistry at the University of Houston. After receiving a second master's degree from UH, Xubing decided to pursue a career in the polymer industry, a field he was extremely dedicated to and in which he excelled. Xubing began his career as a chemical engineer, working first for United Technologies (Stemco) in Longview, Texas, and later for General Cable (now Prysmian Group) in Marshall, Texas. As his experience and interest in cabling grew, Xubing transitioned from engineering to business management, earning a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Texas at Tyler in 2004 and moving to Shanghai, China to serve as General Cable's first ever China Country Manager in 2005. After establishing General Cable's business infrastructure in China, Xubing moved to Cincinnati, Ohio with his family for several years before returning to Shanghai in 2011, initially as the China General Manager for French cabling manufacturer Nexans (2011-2015), and then as the China Managing Director for Datwyler (2015-2021), the Swiss elastomer and information technology firm. Regardless of where he worked, Xubing was always proud of and devoted to his job.
Outside of work, Xubing was a gentle family man who enjoyed watching football (especially his favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys), traveling, learning about history, and spending time with his daughter Angela, his son Hanson, and his wife of 30 years, Ju. He will be greatly missed.
Xubing's funeral was held at Lambie Funeral Home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Thursday, August 11, 2022, and he was laid to rest at Lakeview Cemetery in Cinnaminson, New Jersey. Because many of his family, friends, and colleagues in China could not be present at his funeral, in lieu of flowers Xubing's family encourages mourners to leave him a message on this website by clicking "Share a Memory" and typing a message.
