Zella Sweeney Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Eaton Funeral Home & Cremation Center - Main Chapel on Mar. 13, 2026.
Zella Marie Sweeney, 87, of Bourbon, MO, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.

Born on September 19, 1938, in Redford, MO, to Arthur and Golda (Dinkins) Pyrtle, Zella grew up in the neighboring town of Centerville, MO, where she attended local schools and graduated from high school in 1956. As a spirited cheerleader, she brought joy and enthusiasm to every game and left a lasting impression on those who knew her.

Zella's romantic tale began in a charming fashion that seemed to be straight out of a storybook. It was after a high school basketball game when her Centerville team played against Bourbon that she and her friends decided to eat at the local "Dairy Bar." There, Zella's eyes fell upon a photograph of a young man, Ronald Sweeney Jr., who was serving in the military. Curiosity piqued, she inquired about him and, with a bold and hopeful heart, penned a letter that would mark the beginning of a lifetime of love. Their correspondence blossomed into a deep connection, and upon Ronald's return, the two were inseparable. Zella and Ronald were united in marriage on March 28, 1959, and they cherished nearly 67 years of devotion and companionship.

Together, they were blessed with three children: Ronald III, Lori, and Michael. After spending some time in St. Louis, the Sweeneys moved to Bourbon in 1960 to raise their growing family. In 1970, Ron and Zella embarked on a new adventure as they opened "Rio Grande Western," a store that they would operate together for many years. Zella balanced her role as a dedicated mother and wife with her involvement in their family business, becoming an integral part of its success.

Zella's faith was the cornerstone of her life. A devout Christian, she was an active member of the Living Word Church, where she served with grace and commitment. Her love for the outdoors was evident in the care she took of her garden, and she found great pleasure in tending to her flowers and enjoying meals outside. Family time was precious to Zella, and she relished in playing games and creating memories with her loved ones.

Known for her virtues of truth and honesty, Zella led by example. Her radiant smile and laughter were infectious, lifting the spirits of everyone around her. She will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her loving heart, and the joy she spread throughout her community.

Zella is survived by her loving husband, Ron; her children: Lori McNabb of Bryson City, NC and Michael Sweeney and wife, Kathy of Bourbon, MO; two grandchildren: McKenzie Quillen and husband, James of Hayesville, NC and Spencer McNabb and wife, Taylor of Golden, CO; two beloved great-grandchildren: L.J. & Paisley; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Sweeney III; her parents, Arthur and Golda Pyrtle; five sisters: Melba Cox, Wilma Hill, Barbara Brooks, Shirley Ann Pyrtle, and Marion Alfred Pyrtle; and four brothers: Fred Pyrtle, Wilbur Pyrtle, James Pyrtle, and Junior Pyrtle.

Services will be 5:30 PM, Sunday, March 15, 2026 at the Living Word Church of Leasburg, MO with Pastors Dan Morrison and Jimmy Delacourt officiating. Cremation has taken place.
