As we get older, we get so busy and caught up in our own lives and responsibilities that we forget our parents and grandparents are also growing old with us. Before we know it, they’re sitting in the kitchen with a weekly box of medication we never knew they needed because they don’t want us to worry about them. They become more and more thoughtful towards us while we forget that doctor’s visits become so important to them, not only for their health, but also because it’s a way to spend time with us. In most cases, parents and grandparents move in silence, but my Lola was different, and I’m so thankful that she was.
Although we’re here today to mourn my grandma, I want to take a moment to celebrate the long and exciting life she lived (from my point of view). Not only did she migrate here from the Philippines, but she had 5 kids and their many friends to keep her on her toes. She always had an army to feed. She was well traveled, and I’m not talking about to the Philippines and back, but she’s been to different countries and states, with the solo pictures to prove it.
My earliest memories with her are when she would babysit me. While my dad raised me to eat what’s already on the table, I’ll have to apologize to him today and tell him that she made me whatever I wanted from scratch, even if there was already food prepared.
I remember going into her room and seeing a small bookshelf filled with pictures of her grandkids. After every grandchild or great grandchild was born, surely another picture would pop up, and no matter how old or how different we looked, she could point out and tell you who is who. She never forgot a birthday.
In the weeks following her passing, I’ve heard more and more stories about her. Most of them confirming how she was sharp, and quick to come back with a funny remark. She was animated, expressive, and never afraid to be who she was. She was tough and said what was on her mind. She was like a mountain, firm in her stance, and a force to be reckoned with. If sass was a person, it would take form of my grandma.
Lola - thank you so much for staying strong for as long as you could. Thank you for being our matriarch and for showing us the importance of standing together as a family. Thank you for being with us for so long. And thank you for taking care of each one of us. You’ll forever be remembered, and I hope the legacy you’ve left here will make you proud.

Death is not something anyone is prepared for, whether they are sick or old. It’s a pain that is felt like nothing else. But through this pain, comes nostalgia and memories, that my family and myself will always cherish and remember. I would like to share with all of you, one of the greatest gifts and memories I have of lola.
It’s another summer, and most of my cousins are all together playing in the backyard of tita ginna’s house. it’s myself, giel, gabbie and giselle. In the crib, is crying gericho, silent gep gep and smiling gianna and gillian. In the room, is ate glenda and ate gem and kuya glenn. She would manage to babysit all of us no problem, and we would always manage to drive her crazy. But she was always prepared, with food, with activities, with gifts etc. In these moments, nothing really mattered, because we were safe and we were taken care of. There was no financial problems, or the burdens of life, or the thoughts of being old. All that mattered was, we had to be ready to eat lunch at 12 or else we would get yelled at. But in those moments, we learned the importance of what family meant to each and every one of us, and that was the ability to be together and to take care of one another.
It was insignificant to us back then, but looking at it now, these moments have allowed my family to build a bond and relationship from the very beginning as children. and just like my parents, to grow up and continue that bond as now adults.
Lola, has brought us together, as children. And in those moments. where I was saying goodbye to her at the hospital, I thought to myself, there was so much more I wanted to show her, my job, my home, maybe a husband I may marry, or great grandchildren for her to take care of . to show her that i’m finally an adult and not a child, but there isn’t anymore what if’s because she is now gone. but maybe she will always look at all of us as her grand -children and maybe never as adults, because we will always be her grandchildren in her eyes until death. We will love you always lola baby, and thank you for the everlasting care you will always have for all of us.

My heart breaks knowing you’re no longer with us. You are now in a better place with God. No more pain and suffering to endure. I have lots of things to say but can’t find the words. I am just glad we were able to say our goodbyes. I may not have expressed it enough but I Love You so much. This maybe the end for us here, definitely the beginning of your eternal life with the Lord. With lots of love, Rest In Peace my mother. Until we meet again, Goodbye

Since your sister/our Mom, Mama Cely passed away in June of 2000, you became a second Mom to us. Thank you for the wonderful memories, short story telling, and most of all your beautiful smile. We Love you and we will surely miss you. The night I smelled a scented flower, I knew then you were together with our loving Mom.
