Zoe Evon Hines
October 13, 2001 - July 30, 2024
A beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, and friend, it is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Zoe Evon Hines, a tender soul who loved endlessly.
Zoe made a dramatic entrance into the world on October 13, 2001, arriving a full 40 minutes before her twin brother, Avery. Her family often recalled with fondness how she "stepped on his face and leapt out screaming," making sure everyone knew she had arrived-a trait that persisted throughout her life, as she always made her voice heard.
She had a clear voice from the very beginning of her life, so when Zoe and Avery entered kindergarten, the school recommended the twins start their education in separate classrooms to allow Avery to find his own voice. As a delightful reflection of their complementary natures, Zoe and Avery were lovingly referred to by their family as "the other side of the coin," and they shared an inseparable twin bond.
Precocious from a young age, many who encountered Zoe were enamored by her natural ability to hold a conversation with any adult, asking her family, "How old is she?" Zoe dazzled everyone with her innate ability to articulate her viewpoint with passion and intelligence.
Zoe was an old soul, wise beyond her years, and fearless about advocating for causes she was passionate about from a young age. Her reflections as a teenager revealed a strong moral compass and dedication to justice, inspired by her favorite quote from Martin Luther King Jr.: "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." Following in her parents' footsteps, Zoe was an enthusiastic volunteer, participating in political campaigns from a young age while always honing her fierce voice.
In high school, Zoe was a leader and a mentor, never afraid to try anything once. To say Zoe was actively involved as a high school student is an understatement. Of her many involvements, she most cherished her selection to the P.C.H.S. A Cappella group, Touch of Class, and her four years as a member of the Port Clinton Piranha Girls Sandusky Bay Conference Championship Swim Team. She graduated from Port Clinton High School in 2020 as one of the top ten women in her class, an achievement that spoke volumes about her dedication and commitment to her education.
At Denison University, Zoe studied political science and communication-disciplines that perfectly suited her ability to connect with people from all walks of life and her insatiable curiosity. Her enthusiasm for life and compassionate nature made her a beloved member of every organization and campus group she joined.
Zoe grew up in a community that valued her. Those who knew Zoe cherished her kindness, her compassion, and her unwavering and generous spirit. Friends and neighbors remember Zoe as a bright soul who could light up any room, always knowing how to lift spirits through the love she so freely gave.
For as much as Zoe loved people, she may have loved animals even more. This was especially evident in her relationship with her beloved dog Bentley, whom she adored from the moment he came into her life. She delighted in his progress, teaching him commands and celebrating their incredible bond. Bentley brought Zoe immense joy and comfort, reflecting her boundless love for all creatures.
As a world traveler, Zoe's love for exploring new destinations with her family was a defining aspect of her life. The trips allowed their family to slow down, reconnect, and deepen their bonds, while exposing Zoe to the rich tapestry of cultures around the world. Family trips were cherished adventures that broadened her horizons and deepened her appreciation for the diversity of the world. Their last family trip to Greece-one of Zoe's favorite destinations-was particularly special, creating lasting memories that highlighted the beauty she found in exploring new places.
Zoe's life was marked by her passion for helping others, her love for learning, and her infectious smile that could light up any room. Her giggle was pure and distinctive, bringing joy to those around her and encapsulating her spirited nature. When Zoe saw you, her eyes would light up with warmth and welcome, making everyone feel truly seen and valued. Zoe had an uncanny ability to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds. And she always knew how to make someone feel special. She could see your inner light, light the match, and help you shine, even when you couldn't see it in yourself. Her immense empathy defined her interactions, making her a comforting presence to everyone she met.
Zoe is survived by her loving parents, Adrienne and Scott Hines, her twin brother, Avery, her grandparents, Evon & Victor Kademenos "Nunu & Papou," her aunt, Jessica Kademenos, the man she loved, Kertis Johnson, her sweet companion dog, Bentley, and many more aunts, uncles, and cousins and family who adored her. Her legacy of kindness, perseverance, and love will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
A celebration of Zoe's life will be held at Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home, 216 Washington Street, Port Clinton, on Saturday, August 3 from 12-5. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ottawa County Humane Society or Bistro 163, causes close to Zoe's heart.
