Edward Michl Obituary

Edward G. Michl, MD, passed away on July 18, 2022. He was a long-time resident (39 years) of Naperville. Born on June 21, 1954 in Berwyn, Illinois to Edward and Cecelia. He grew up in Westchester with his brother Bard and sister Nadine. He went to Proviso West High School with many colorful characters. From there, he received a BS in Biology at Loyola University and went to medical school at Loyola Stritch School of Medicine. He married Renee after meeting each other when they both stood up to their friends' wedding. He completed his residency at Medical College of Wisconsin. In 1983 he began his medical career, originally at Glen Ellyn Clinic, later to become DuPage Medical Group and then Duly Health and Care. He was the first internist from that group to establish a practice in Naperville. His primary hospital was Edward Hospital, where he was instrumental in getting rapid glucometer assessments of diabetic patients. Prior to that, routine blood draws were done. He was also interested in becoming a mentor and was involved in Physical Diagnosis education with Loyola Stritch School of Medicine with 3rd year medical students. His passion was his family and travel. Running marathon/half marathons were also a passion, but even more so because of his daughters Laura and Lisa were there to complete the events together. Road trips across the US during summer vacation were a given and sometimes involved unexpected turns in the road. Nightly family dinners discussing the day's events were always filled with medical and funny stories. His enjoyment of photography, golf, scuba diving, hiking, biking, and running was also part of his life. A rare lung cancer cut his life short, but he did not let his illness stop him from scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef and climbing with his daughters up to Half Dome in Yosemite National Park. Survived by his devoted wife Renee (Gabrys) of 42 years and his loving daughters, Laura and Lisa, and his brother and sister. He was also a fond uncle of many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Association. The family requests that anyone attending the Visitation and Funeral to please wear a mask. Visitation will be Thursday, July 21, 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 22, 11:00 AM at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 1450 Green Trails Dr., Naperville. Interment will be at SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Naperville. For information please call 630/355-0213 or visit www.friedrich-jones.com

Dear Michl Family,
Dr. Michl was our primary care doc for over 25 years. During a recent Duly visit we found out of his passing. Him and my husband grew up in Westchester so would swap stories. We deeply respected him and his hard work and care for his patients and his sincere interest in our health and welfare. He loved all of you and always had a big smile on his face when he would show me a Disney marathon medal and a couple photos. When we visited Czech Republic a few years ago he gave us some suggestions as well and was really happy we enjoyed our trip too. So very sorry for your loss. You are in our thoughts and prayers

I saw Dr. Michl over 20 years ago when I was 20 or 21. I remember talking to him about being overwhelmed and depressed in college after a routine physical. He talked to me about how courageous it is to admit you´re struggling while being willing to take responsibility for your own treatment. I think about this often- it was such sincere advice and he really meant it. Changed my life.

I am so sorry to learn of Ed Michl's passing and sorry that I missed learning about his funeral. He was our internist for more than 30 years, and took such good care of us. We had great conversations about so many topics, and even visited my son in California with his daughter to look into work in film. My husband and Ed both found themselves with cancer much too early, and he was kind enough to call me after Gary died this May when it was difficult for him to speak. We both valued his talent as a diagnostician and caring physician.

Dr Michelle was a great doctor. I saw him for many years and had a great relationship with him. We kept thing pretty black and white when we talked to each other. We even had nurses look in to see if we where okay!!
We had just a couple of times to fly drones together.

I was extremely moved to hear that our dearest Dr. Michl died weeks ago, yet maybe it is better that I share a brief story about our journey. Dr. M. was my husband's doctor (and mine too later), shared multiple hobbies (cycling), great sportsmen and educators, mentors. Mike was diagnosed with ALS about the time Dr. M was diagnosed with cancer. Dr. M. through me checked on Mike's journey (always those jokes). Mike died in February. My heart is broken that we also lost Dr. M. found out today. I sincerely extend my condolences to his wife who I feel deeply compassionate for and his daughters who were the luckiest girls in the world.

I met Dr. Michl on one of the best random draws of my life. 32 years ago, I was new to the area and looking for a doc. I found a great doctor and an awesome man. Like so many, I consider Doctor Michl as much a friend as most I know. I always tried to have a joke ready to share but his were always so much better. To his wonderful family he discussed so often, I send my deepest condolences and prayers. I will miss you, Doctor.

Dr. Michl was a wonderful friend and a great doctor for decades for me and my son, Will. We worked out together at Edwards Health and Fitness Center for years. He always took the time to check in on me and gave me great health suggestions. He took an interest in my famliy as I did his, and he was very proud of his two girls. He shared his battle with cancer with me, and when I asked him how he was doing he seemed surprised that I would come in for an appointment and we would talk about his treatments and battle. He would say" let me get on the table and I'll give you my white coat". His sense of humor was second to none. We will miss him and we were all blessed to know him.
Dr. Michl truly cared for his patients!

As one of the "colorful characters" from high school, I and the whole high school gang kept a relationship throughout the years. From weekend trips out in nature, Super Bowl parties, and sharing in life events, Ed was there to add to our gatherings. He will be sorely missed. My sympathies to his family.
