Nancy Hanks Obituary

Nancy Storter Hanks

Naples, FL

Nancy Storter Hanks, 78, peacefully departed life on November 30, 2018 at Avow Hospice. Born on March 10, 1940 in Naples, Florida, she was a lifelong resident. She was proud to be a Storter; one of Collier's pioneering families.

Nancy was a girl from "old Naples," growing up playing on the streets between the commercial fishing docks on Naples Bay and the Pier back when it was a working pier. At Naples High School, she was the head majorette and retained her fire baton twirling skills late into her life. For most of her adult life, Nancy worked in ladies apparel. She loved fashion and spent many years at Adelaide's on Fifth Avenue South. She especially loved going on buying trips to high-fashion houses in New York City. Nancy was also a Charter Member of the Prissy Hen Club and the Collier County Ladies Sporting Club.

She was a creative person who loved to plan weddings and parties, make floral arrangements, work in the yard, decorate the family home and she could work magic with a Krylon paint bomb. Christmas was her favorite time of year, a time where every inch of the house and yard were adorned in holiday decor. The Hanks' were known for their epic Christmas parties, opening their home to all including Santa Claus, who often dropped in for a cocktail.

Nancy and Vern raised their family in Naples. They preferred to be known as Nanny and Papa. They were happiest when the family was gathered together for a fabulous meal, spending time together laughing and enjoying the grandchildren. Many friends of the Hanks children were included in these gatherings and loved as extended family members.

Nancy was predeceased by her beloved husband Vern Hanks, her parents, George M. Storter and Jessie W. Storter (McEwen), her sister-in-law, Faye Storter, nephew Mike Storter, cousins James Cairns and Bette Donovan and sisters, Buena and Genona.

Nancy is survived by her children Jessica Thomas (Grant), Doug Hanks, Hap Hanks (Glenda), her brothers, Bem Storter and Gavin Storter (Alvarene), sister, Velma Landley, her three adored grandsons, Andrew Sorber (Kathryn), Tucker Hanks and Noah Hanks. She is also survived by cousins, nephews and nieces whom she dearly loved.

A celebration of her life is being planned for January and will be announced at a later date. The Hanks family is grateful for the tender care Nancy received at Avow Hospice. Donations can be made in Nancy's honor to Avow, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, FL 34105 or via online donation at https://avowcares.org/donate-now-1/.

There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about you. I miss our hours long phone calls. There’s so... many things we could talk about these days. Miss you Nanny!

To Nancy's family and friends- I worked with her at Zita remotely- she in Naples and me in Milwaukee, we met up in New York for buying trips many times, she was almost 30 years older than me but we had an amazing connection! She was so full of fun, sass and southern charm! I loved her and am so saddened to hear of her passing. She was a great woman! My deepest condolences to all of you, I wish I could have been there for her service. Sending you all much love- Heidi Martin

Nancy was one of my first playmates we were neighbors. We rode our brothers horses to the beach many times, rode bikes (she gave me her little yellow bike so I could learn to ride) she got a bigger one. I will never forget the happy times we had together. So rest in peace dear friend.

Nancy and I went to Budapest Hungary.

To the family, you have my sincere condolences. When someone falls asleep in death (Ecclesiastes 9: 5,10) the memories we have of them become our most precious treasure. May those memories comfort you as well as Gods promise at John 6:40.

My condolences to the family and friends of Nancy. I only knew her in high school but she left indelible memories during those junior and senior years. I remember her as fun, feisty, and fearless. She could twirl those batons and perform as if no one was watching. And her fire baton routines left me speechless. If you wanted her opinion, and even if you didn't, she spoke her mind freely. I can only imagine the memories she left with those who knew her longer and better. She will be greatly missed, but am sure her unique and entertaining personality is shining in Heaven. I loved Aunt Nanny. We became very close over the last few years. I will miss her. She had an opinion on everything and didn't mind letting you know. We had so... many laughs, we had a fix for everybody! Fly high Nanny. You're in good company!
Love You,
Robin
