Dick had a paper route with the Boston Globe and gave it to me in our Senior year which I appreciated. I think it is really amazing that from this small paper route he rose to be a giant in the paper industry. He attended Mary and my wedding 71 years ago' I plan to attend his funeral May he Rest in Peace.Gus

I am gutted by the news of Richard's passing. Mr. Ahern was like a second father to me. I grew up in his household and ate many times at his table. He had very high standards for people, especially those that he cared about and I cannot fathom a world where he isn't looking over my shoulder, where I won't ultimately be called to his side to answer for my choices. I was grateful for everything he taught me and there are countless memories that I replay from my youth of his stern and confident advice. Dick Ahern did not sugarcoat anything and he spoke to me in a way that was plain. I cannot imagine what it would have been like to live with this oversight daily as his kids did...but to me, I relished the accountability to someone so exacting in their standards.

If you were a guest at the Ahern household, it was paramount that you knew how to split wood and operate a chainsaw. A fall weekend was worthless to the equity of manhood without chasing the last bits of sunlight with a chainsaw in hand. This was how you earned a dinner in their house...otherwise you were a freeloader (guilty on many occasions).

I was lucky to have him in my life and thankful for his memories. His devotion to family and church were unusual and and I am certain he will be dearly missed. His family is filled with some of the best people in this world.

As his younger sister, Richard was a loving big brother. His kindness, high standards of morality, work ethic, and love of family were impressive. He told a good story, loved a good book and to recite the poem "The Highway Man"and read " Hiawatha" to me. After my father died Richard became the backbone of our family. He was loved and will be missed.
