Dorothy Monie Obituary

POMARIA — Dorothy Helen Wicker Monie, 86, died Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at her residence.

Born on February 15, 1939 in Pomaria, she was a daughter of the late George Ralph and Ruby Margaret Caldwell Wicker.

She received her nursing degree in 1961 from the Kershaw County Memorial Hospital and a bachelor's degree from Tennessee Temple College in 1963. She worked for many years at Mill's Clinic, Newberry County Memorial Hospital, Baptist Medical Center, and later with home health. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church and attended Grace Baptist Church in West Columbia. Mrs. Monie was a member of the Dutch Fork Genealogical Society, the Newberry Historical Society, and was active in the revitalization of the Newberry Opera House.

She is survived by her husband, Gary Lavan Monie, Sr.; daughters, Margaret Inez "Meg" Womack and her husband Vernon of Hendersonville, Tenn., Joy Deanna Wargo and her husband Todd of Pomaria; a son, Gary Lavan Monie, Jr. and his wife Darlene of Pomaria; sisters, Irene W. Welch and her husband Ed of Sebring, Fla., and Grace W. Holliman and her husband Bill of West Columbia; grandchildren, Bethany Federico Thapa and husband Sushant of Lynchburg, Va., Zachary Federico of Arlington, Va., Ryan Monie of Pomaria, and Journee Ballenger of Pomaria; one great-grandchild, Freyja Ballenger; and adopted son, Matthew Edward Monie.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2025 at Grace Baptist Church, Denham Avenue, West Columbia. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to SIM USA, a mission board she supported for many years, by going to simusa.org.
