Helene Johnson Obituary

Helene "Lainie" Johnson
6/24/2025
Helene "Lainie" Johnson died Tuesday, June 24th in NY surrounded by her family after a brief illness. She was most well known for her unlimited kindness, easy laughter and infectious smile. A native of Rhode Island she later joined the Air Force before returning to civilian life and moving to Connecticut. Lainie was an amazing mother to her only child and a dedicated and loving wife to her husband until his passing in 1992. Afterwards she spent a large part of her life with her dear companion Robert in the NY Adirondacks until her death. She was predeceased by her husband, Gregory "Pete" Johnson, her sister Elizabeth "Liz" Allen, and her parents, Henry Matoes Sr. and Betty Waddell Matoes. She is survived by her son Peter Johnson, her brother Henry Matoes Jr. and his family, Robert Chrosniak and his family, and many friends and family members. Lainie was a member of the Bridgewater Fire Dept. Auxiliary and an active member of her local AmVets and Elks lodge. Her immeasurable love of animals and nature was well known, and she had opened her heart to many pets and needy animals throughout her life. Lainie would want all of us to carry on that legacy of love and kindness.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to your local animal shelters. A private graveside service will be held on July 25th followed by a public celebration of life at the Bridgewater Fire Dept at 2:00.

A devastating loss to the community. Helene shined incredible bright and was such a wonderful advocate for herself, rural healthcare, and of course animals. Any experience with Helene was a positive one that left my spirits lifted.
