William Austin Obituary

In the early morning hours on Sunday, March 5, 2023, with a full moon shining through the window, William Byrd "Billy" Austin Jr., gained his wings at the age of 68 at his lake home in Clarksville, Virginia.

Born in Lynchburg, he was a son of Helen Austin Dooley and the late William Byrd Austin Sr. Billy married the love of his life, Julia Austin on July 21, 1979. They raised two daughters on the dirt road. He was a long-term employee of Virginia Fiber/Greif and was a charter member of the Red House Volunteer Fire Department.

Smart as a tack, a superb grill master and a fixer of all things, Billy was an avid Virginia Tech fan, a talented athlete, an involved Dad and doting Pa. He loved spending time at the lake, being Captain of the pontoon and relished every second spent with his family, friends and five loving grandkids.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his two daughters, Adrian Scruggs and husband Adam, and their children, Marleigh and Jeffrey, and Noelle Ferguson and husband Bryan, and their children, Austin, Layton and Taylor.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Vickie Willis and Sherry Austin.

A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, March 10, 2023, at Providence Baptist Church with Dr. Reginald Warren and the Rev. Anthony Reeves officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at the home of Noelle and Bryan Ferguson.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Red House Volunteer Fire Department, 9467 Red House Road, Red House, VA 23963 or your favorite charity.

It’s always sad to look in the obituaries for Robinson Funeral Home and see the death of a former classmate and friend. I had classes with Billy at ACHS and later at CVCC. I’ll always remember his smile and his humor. My condolences to his family and his friends.

I am so very sorry to hear of the passing of Billy. The main thing I remember about him from years ago in high school was that he was a kind guy who always had a smile. It sounds like that continued to describe him as he lived his life as husband, father, grandfather and friend. May God comfort you during this difficult time. My prayers will be with you.
