Arthur Auerbach Obituary

AUERBACH - Arthur, husband, father, grandfather and teacher, died at home on July 20, 2021, in Roslyn, following a short illness. He was 91 years old. Arthur spent his entire career as an educator in New York City, beginning as a permanent substitute at Bushwick High School before teaching social studies at Russell Sage Junior High School and Martin Van Buren High School. After a brief period at Queens College, where he trained student teachers, he joined the faculty at Springfield Gardens High School (Queens) and quickly rose to the position of Assistant Principal. Arthur then took a position in the Office of Budget and Reports at the NYC Board of Education's Division of High Schools, holding several assignments before retiring as the Superintendent of Operations for NYC High Schools. Arthur was always a strong supporter of the New York City Public School Athletic League and served on the Board of Directors of the Wingate Foundation. Arthur was born and raised in Brooklyn, attended Samuel J. Tilden High School and was the first in his family to earn a college degree, graduating from New York University after attending SUNY Oswego. He lived in Bellmore, NY, for 53 years before moving to the Atria at Roslyn Harbor. Arthur married Natalie Silver, the love of his life, on December 24, 1950 and they celebrated 70 years of marriage before her death in December 2020. Arthur is survived by his children Reed (Adrienne) and Lisa, his grandchildren, Max and Tierney Auerbach, his nephews, great-nephews and great-niece. A ceremony will be held on July 23, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. at Beth Moses Cemetery. To honor Arthur's memory, please consider a donation to Franklin & Marshall College for the Endowed Scholarship Fund in honor of Arthur and Natalie Auerbach, which prioritizes NYC high school students for financial aid.
