Max Fleming Obituary

August 24, 1924 – September 27, 2012

Mr. Ray Max Fleming passed away on Thursday, September 27 at his home on No Name Lake in Southport, FL.

Max is preceded in death by his father, George Monroe Fleming, mother, Maude Thrash Fleming, 2 brothers, 4 sisters, Louise Fleming, his wife of 32-years, and daughter, Kay Fleming Christo.

He is survived by son, George R. Fleming, daughters, Kim Fleming and Maxie Fleming Hecht and husband, David W. Hecht, sisters, Margaret Jean Browning of Blairsville, GA and Mabel Corbitt of Atlanta, GA.

Mr. Fleming was born in New Brockton, AL and grew up in Brinson, GA. His first job was picking cotton. He also worked at everything from "shaking" peanuts to delivering newspapers on his bicycle to working on a rolling store. He attended Young Harris College and graduated from Florida State University.

Max served as a bombardier in the United States Air Force during WW II. He married Louise Miller Fleming in 1948 and lived in Blountstown, FL. They moved to Meridian, MS where he worked with his brother-in-law at Mayflower Van Horn Moving and Storage before moving to Panama City in 1955 to start Fleming Brothers Machine Works with his brother, J.D. Fleming. Soon Mr. Fleming began buying, selling and developing land on Panama City Beach, Gulf County and in the Sand Hills of Bay County. Max also served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Bay Medical Center and was on their board for 10-years. Max loved to work and never really retired.

Max's real love was hunting. He hunted locally, across the United States, and in Nicaragua and Africa. He was especially proud of his last safari at the age of 85.

He loved his lake and his final request was for his ashes to be placed there. The ashes of his dog, Jake, will also be placed in No Name Lake.

Funeral services are Friday, October 5 at 10:00 AM at First United Methodist Church of Panama City, FL. Reception/Visitation will follow the Service in the Trinity Center. Reverend Dewey Max Fleming will be performing the service.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, please make donations to Bay Medical Center or the charity of your choice.

Kim, George and Maxie, I am sorry to hear of the recent loss of your father, especially as it is so close on the heels of Kay's passing. I know you must all be reeling. I wish there was something better I could say except I'm sorry, but there really isn't. Just know that your family remains in my thoughts and prayers.
