Joseph Shamansky Obituary

MOUNT CARMEL — Joseph M. Shamansky, 93, of 446 E. Center St., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at his residence.

Born in Danville, June 26, 1919, he was a son of the late Stephen Shamansky and Gezilla Harrison. He was also a former resident of 241 E. Avenue, Mount Carmel.

He graduated in 1936 from Mount Carmel High School.

He was a master sergeant in the 806th Engineer Squadron of the U.S. Army from February 1940 until October 1945. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He received the American Defense Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon and the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon.

Joseph was married in Rothsville, Jan. 8, 1949, to Helen Sokol, who preceded him in death July 17, 1994.

He worked as a machinist at TRW and worked for Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Anthracite Fire Company, and a life member of the Clover Fire Company, all of Mount Carmel.

Joseph is survived by a daughter, Sharon Stankiewicz, and her husband, Lawrence, of Mount Carmel; a son, Michael Shamansky, and his wife, Barbara, of Mount Carmel; seven grandchildren, Brandon Stankiewicz, Ashley Shamansky, Lauren Stankiewicz, Michael R. Shamansky, Stephanie Stankiewicz, Mark Stankiewicz and Erin Shamansky; a great-granddaughter, Natalie Kim, and nieces, nephews and a sisters-in-law.

Joseph was the last of his family and was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

SHAMANSKY — Joseph M. Shamansky, 93, of 446 E. Center St., Mount Carmel. A Divine Liturgy will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Archpriest Michael Hutsko officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Mount Carmel Township. A viewing will be held from 9 to 9:40 a.m. Friday with a Panyhida service at 9:15 a.m. at the CJ Lucas Funeral Home, 27 N. Vine St., Mount Carmel. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Mount Carmel Public Library, 30 S. Oak St., Mount Carmel, or SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, 131 N. Beech St., Mount Carmel.
