ASHLAND - Joseph John Smolock Sr., 78, of Ashland, passed away Thursday morning, March 23, 2023, at Broad Mountain Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Frackville, after a short, but valiant, battle against cancer. His last weeks were surrounded by family who will miss him greatly.
He was born in Centralia, Dec. 7, 1944, a son of the late Michael and Helen (Kenenitz) Smolock.
He was a graduate of the former Conyngham Township High School.
Joseph was married at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, in Centralia, Aug. 27, 1966, to the late R. Sharon (McHale) Smolock, who preceded him in death Nov. 11, 2021.
Joseph worked in construction as a laborer and operator. He is best known for taking exemplary care of St. Ignatius Cemetery for two decades in Centralia. He took pride in ensuring the grounds were kept in pristine condition and honored those who were laid to eternal rest.
Joseph was a profoundly deep thinker who was wise beyond his years and precise in his observations.
Joseph is survived by a son, Joseph Smolock Jr. and his wife, Kim, of Conyngham Valley; a daughter, Erin Smolock and her husband, Shawn Meier, of Girardville; a son, Bryan Smolock and his wife, Tara, of Ashland; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two sisters, Marianne Smeck and her husband, Harry, and Sueellen Edwards; a sister-in-law, Nancy Kay (Schisler) Smolock; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Smolock.
