Craig Cheledinas Obituary

Born Aug. 10, 1951, in Helena, Montanna, Craig Francis Cheledinas passed away peacefully with a smile on his face, gazing at the trees, on Jan. 15, 2025, at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, Washington.

Craig was a truly exceptional man who made an indelible impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He called Fairbanks, Alaska home for many years, where the stunning beauty of the outdoors and the tight-knit community made it not just his home but his paradise.

Craig approached life with his own unique blend of creativity and extraordinary talent. Blessed with gifted hands, he brought his vision to life in ways few could match. His sense of humor was equally distinctive, as he saw the world from a refreshing, often unconventional perspective.

A true man of the land, Craig had a deep connection to nature, finding beauty and inspiration in every corner of the wilderness. He cherished each form of nature, from the trees to the streams, and every moment spent outdoors.

Some of Craig's favorite activities included fishing for salmon in Chitina on the Copper River, sharing stories and conversing with friends, blueberry picking, foraging for mushrooms, and simply being one with nature. He was a talented artist, known for his work in ceramics, glass, printmaking and sculpture. As an avid fisherman, fish were frequently the subject of his artwork. Craig was deeply involved in the local arts community and the University of Alaska's Fairbanks' art program. He was also a playful musician, enjoying the banjo and drums. Always encouraging of others, Craig inspired many to pursue their own artistic passions.

Craig's kindness, tenderness, and love for children were evident to all who knew him. With his likeness to Santa Claus, he was often asked to dress up as Santa for children's Christmas events, spreading joy and warmth wherever he went. Craig will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and the community that adored him. His artistic presence in Fairbanks, where he added vibrant color and creativity to every corner, will leave a lasting legacy.

Craig was preceded in death by his brothers, Mark and Gary; parents George and Margaret Mae; and niece, Natasha. He is survived by his brothers, Scott and Brian; sister, Karen; sister-in-law, Inge; as well as his nephew, Daniel, and nieces, Christina and Mikaela.

Craig's legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be remembered for his joy, big heart, infectious laugh, warm hugs, witty sense of humor, and the twinkle in his eye.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Craigs passing. I worked with Craig during the pipeline and then much later at Clear AFS. Always a great guy with stories and laughter. Sometimes I would see him at the Farmers Market. I have two pieces of his ceramics. Now I can fondly remember him as I look at his artwork. RIP Craig.

We met Craig the first year we were in Fairbanks and he proved to be such a good, kind and generous friend. We traded smoked salmon recipes for years, and I still have several ceramic pieces he made. He will be missed!

Craig was an incredible artist both in glass and in pottery. He trained in classical glass arts in Italy. He was one of the few people that we would share many things with. He had a buoyant personality and was full of life. Craig was a wonder and we will miss him.

Craig was a curious guy. Always asking questions. Salmon fascinated him. He loved to catch them, eat them, dream about them. On a dip-netting adventure to Chitina, a few months after Fukushima blew up and melted down, we talked about the future of salmon and making art in Alaska. He was optimistic.

I remember dipping salmon on the Copper River with Craig and Jerry. I ducked in the tent for a nap and when I crawled out Craig had filled our limit of salmon. I didn't even care because seeing the smile on his face was enough.
