Larry Wick Obituary

Larry Reed Wick, 62, passed away quietly April 3, 2016, at St. Luke's Hospice in Duluth, Minnesota, with his family by his side.
He was raised in Two Harbors, Minnesota, and started studying the martial arts in 1967. He tested for his black belt under Grandmaster Hwang Kee in 1973 and began teaching Tang Soo Do in Two Harbors in 1977. In 1985, he transferred to the World Tang Soo Do Association (WTSDA) under Grandmaster Jae Chul Shin. That same year, he moved to Fairbanks and began teaching Tang Soo Do in the Community Schools Program and at the Fairbanks Athletic Club.
In 1988, Master Wick opened the Fairbanks Tang Soo Do Academy in Chena Pump Plaza, where it still operates. He served on the WTSDA Board of Directors, served as the Alaska and Canada Regional Director, and assisted with the creation of the WTSDA instructional books that help preserve the art of Tang Soo Do. He was named "Instructor of the Year" in 1992, "Master of the Year" in 2008 and was the recipient at four Master's clinics of the Spirit Award, which was renamed the "Master Larry Wick Spirit Award." In 2014, he was presented the Champion For Children Award, which recognizes individuals for extraordinary and exemplary service to children in the Fairbanks area. His years of practice and training culminated in the creation of the Split Second Survival self-defense program.
Master Wick loved to fish and spend time in nature when he was not teaching classes. He always came back to class rejuvenated and full of stories of "the one that got away" and of his adventures in general. His fishing buddies will be telling "lies" for a long time.
Master Wick was preceded in death by his sister, Christine Wick; parents Janet and Harold, and his nephew, Derek. He leaves his family members, William and Nancy, Steven and Connie, Dale and Karen, Terry and Deb, Judith, James and Hazel, Betty and Neal Scurry, many nieces and nephews, and the thousands whose lives he touched between Minnesota, Fairbanks, and the World Tang Soo Do Association.
Family, friends, and kindness were of the utmost importance to Master Wick.
Master Wick wants everyone to remember him by taking the time to put a smile on a stranger's face. The Fairbanks World Tang Soo Do Academy will host a memorial picnic at a later date.

I'm one of his fishing buddies. I only knew Larry for a dozen years or so, and that was once a year, but he became a brother in a very short time.
He told many stories around a campfire and I believe every one of them.
Never knew him to not tell the truth.
The world is a better place because of him.

I had the honor of meeting Master Wick in Fairbanks in 2002 while attending his Split Second Survival seminar. He was a kind and gentle soul, and made me a better person just by taking his class. He will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

Master Wick taught my 2 sons tang soo do and one of them went on to receive his black belt; it was one of the proudest moments of his life. Most of all, the boys, my wife, and I remember what an incredibly caring and generous man Master Wick was; every Christmas, every student at his school (over 100!) received a personal, handwritten card. Master Wick was all about the kids; I feel honored to have known him. The world was a better place because of Master Wick.

Two of our kids trained under Master Wick and one received her black belt. We are sad that our younger son won't have his black belt tied by Master Wick but we know his incredible spirit will be beaming down on him when that day comes. Master Wick has left an indelible mark on our family and we will never forget him. May he rest in eternal peace.
