Asher was my first and only boyfriend. For any close friends or family reading this, you are probably very confused since you most likely do not know who I am. Asher was in my class at Poe Montessori with Ms. G. when he was in kindergarten, and I was in preK. We quickly became preschool sweethearts and played together every day at reses. I still remember playing with him. We would play fantasy games, I still remember the silly things we would pretend to be. I can still picture us playing by one big tree that was by the little kids playground. The next year came, and at reses on the first day of school, I ran to the playground to meet Asher as usual. But Asher was now in first grade, while I was a mere kindergartener. He came to me and explained that he was breaking up with me because he was too old for me and had to go play football in the field with the "big boys." My dramatic response was to say, "I'm never speaking to you again!" Then I sat on the hill that separated the big kids playground from the little kids playground and cried for the rest of reses. I've told the story so many times, my first heart break, and I have thought of him so often in the past 14 years. I reached out to him on facebook just 10 days before he did it again...!! he left me again for much better and bigger things. I am still grateful for the friendship and the memories of my very first love, my sweet preschool boyfriend Asher. I will always have a special place in my heart for him, and I will never forget him.

Dear Janet and Jon -
I am simply stunned and saddened. My heart goes out to both of you and your dear daughter Ellie. I remember when you shared that Asher was born - and the joy that you had. Words cannot suffice to convey the feelings I have for you both in this time of Asher's passing. Love always, Sabrina (Richman Goodson) Crow - UNC, MA, 1990

Janet and Ellie, we are so sad about the loss of Asher, and it is a profound loss. We loved him dearly. His distinctive personality with all its many facets, coupled with his kind heart, made him an unforgettable friend. I hope you can be consoled by the knowledge that Asher is well and happy in the presence of God, and at last is having all of his questions about the cosmos answered in full. I can imagine his excitement.

Dear Janet, I am so sorry about your and Jon's and Ellie's devastating loss. I saw Asher only twice, briefly at the Ronald MacDonald House in Houston and at an event in Raleigh following his transplant. His calm demeanor as a child and what you have shared about him since depict a remarkably brave young man who must have been a delight to know. You are very much in my thoughts and prayers.

Words cannot express your loss. My best wishes for peace and comfort are with Asher's parents and family.
I am awed by Asher's courage in dealing with his health. There was something of a fighter in that young 9th grader I knew 8 or 9 years ago that still resonates in me.
In a conversation at the hospital in Atlanta, I told him that his frequent illnesses were not fair and he he cut me off right there. I still feel it's not fair but I know he lived every minutes of his 21 years. This former soldier and French teacher learned about true courage from the bravest student I have ever had in class, Asher McGirt.
