Edward Askew Obituary

Edward Roland Askew

May 26, 1931 - February 11, 2016

Raleigh

Edward Roland Askew died Thursday, February 11th. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alton Bernard Askew and Edna Hancock Askew and his older brother John Askew. Surviving are his wife of 64 years Mary Huneycutt Askew and five children: Rebecca Elizabeth (Nell), Mary Huneycutt (Marty), John Hancock (Patra), James Alton and Joseph Ward. Eddie is also survived by Mary and Marty's son Edwin; John and Patra's children Carrie (Lee), Stephanie (Nick), Steven (Emily) and Kacie, along with their seven grandchildren.

Eddie and Mary raised their children in Raleigh, Raeford, Gastonia, High Point and Asheboro returning to Raleigh in retirement. Eddie and Mary were Broughton High School sweethearts (he '49, she '50). They were married while he was studying Textiles at NC State and she was at Meredith with both graduating on the same weekend in May 1955. During the halcyon days of North Carolina Textiles, Eddie worked for Uniroyal, Texelastic and JRA Industries (Jung Corporation) in Asheboro where he served as president for 17 years. A bright red NC State fan, Eddie taught his children to hate Carolina, tolerate Wake Forest and ignore Duke. Eddie finished his life with that full head of beautiful white hair along with his familiar sarcastic wit and quick smile.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Transitions Lifecare, the employees of Homewatch Caregivers and Dr. Anant Soni and his staff. A celebration of Eddie's life will be held later this spring. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Pete Jenkins Scholarship Endowment with checks made payable to the NC State Engineering Foundation, and mailed to NCSU, Campus Box 7901, Raleigh NC 27695. Tributes can be left at http://www.cremationsocietync.com/

Frieda and I were deeply saddened to hear of Eddie's passing. We really enjoyed the times we had together at the Joint Board meetings although they were too brief. May God continue to Bless and comfort you during these trying times.
