Frank Pollock Obituary

Dr. Frank Edward Pollock

September 28, 1927 - September 23, 2017

Winston-Salem

Frank Edward Pollock of Winston-Salem, North Carolina passed away quietly surrounded by his adoring wife and loving family at midnight on September 23rd, 2017.  He was a week shy of celebrating his 90th birthday.  He was born on September 28th, 1927 in New Martinsville, West Virginia to Verne and Eloise Pollock.  He grew up in Woodsfield, Ohio with his parents and one brother.  He was educated at the Ohio State University where he received both undergraduate and medical degrees.  He married Maenell "True" Crum on June 17th, 1954 and then served in the Public Health Service at Pine Ridge, South Dakota from 1955 until 1957.  He moved his bride to Winston-Salem to begin his training in Orthopedic Surgery at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1957.  He finished his training in 1961 and practiced orthopedics in Winston-Salem until his retirement in 1995.  During his career, he served as chief of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Chairman of the Division of Surgery at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, President of the North Carolina Orthopedic Society, Director of the Surry County Clinic for Children's Special Health Services and Clinical and Assistant Professorships at Bowman Gray School of Medicine.  He was a visiting lecturer in Law and Forensic Medicine at Wake Forest University.  He was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for the North Carolina Public Health Association and the Outstanding Service Award from the North Carolina Orthopedic Association.  His passion for music was unbounded as he played clarinet, saxophone and e-flat alto horn in numerous bands including the Ohio State Marching Band, the New Horizons Band, the Dixie Dogs, and numerous Moravian bands.  His hobbies included rebuilding and maintaining cars, woodworking, boating, boat modeling and studying riverboat history.  He was a life long member of Knollwood Baptist Church and served as deacon, Sunday School teacher and basketball coach.  But of all his accomplishments, he was most smitten by his lovely bride of 63 years and most proud of his four children.  He was the consummate, caring husband, and the adoring, attentive father who worked tirelessly to nurture and provide for his beloved family.  No husband or father will ever be his peer or equal.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank LaVerne Pollock and Lillian Eloise Dietrich Pollock.  He is survived by his beautiful wife Maenell "True" Crum Pollock; son Frank Edward Pollock, Jr and his wife Tammy of Winston-Salem, NC; son David Carl Pollock and his wife Debby of Lewisville, NC; daughter Elizabeth "Liz" Pollock Ladd and her husband Chuck of Raleigh, NC; daughter Patricia "Trish" Pollock Creta and her husband Eric of Apex, NC; brother Donald William Pollock and his wife Susan of Oak Ridge, NC; granddaughter Katharine Frances Pollock of New Haven, CT; grandson Garrison Edward Pollock of Charleston, SC; grandson Davidson McKinley Pollock of Chapel Hill, NC; granddaughter Alexandra Grace Pollock of Lewisville; granddaughter Madeline Elizabeth Pollock of Lewisville, NC; grandson Nicholas James Pollock of Lewisville, NC.  He will be missed terribly, treasured always and loved eternally.  The family will received visitors and guests at the Salem Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 27th from 7 until 9pm.  The celebration of his life will be held at Knollwood Baptist Church Thursday, September 28th at 2pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Knollwood Baptist Church or the J. Mack Gamble Fund to promote the historical and educational purposes of the Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen. Online condolences may be sent to www.salemfh.com

I was one of Dr Pollacks first patients when my parents moved to Winston Salem from West Virginia in mid 1960. I became his patient when he began practice in the old Bobbits Pharmacy office off Hawthorne
Rd. Dr Pollack performed several surgeries on me that I contribute to my ability to remain walking at 63 yrs of age. I remember my Dad, also Stephen Honaker Sr. Talking about Riverboats And old cars with him. Dad enjoyed hearing of his hobbies. My condolences to Dr Pollacks family. I only learned of his passing by looking online for his name while fondly remembering his gentle way and wonderful smiles. RIP Doc.

Dear Family,
Dr. Pollock was my daughter, Anna's Orthopedic Surgeon for many years. He was a very compassionate physician, and sincerely cared for his patients. He leaves a legacy that you all can be so very proud of. As much as you all loved him, know that the Lord Jesus Christ loves him more than any of us could ever know.
Most sincerely,
Nancy Davis Morrow
