James Burris Obituary

James Horace Burris

March 17, 1938 - April 15, 2025

Raleigh, North Carolina - Jim Burris, 87, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2025, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Born on March 17, 1938, in Lenior, North Carolina, Jim lived a life marked by unwavering integrity, deep faith, and a steadfast devotion to family and community.

A proud graduate of King's Business School in Charlotte, NC, Jim went on to become a certified North Carolina General Construction Contractor. His professional journey was both diverse and impactful. He enjoyed a long and successful career with Nationwide Insurance before transitioning into business development with Cary Reconstruction Company. In each role he held, Jim was known for his astute business sense and his commitment to building lasting partnerships grounded in trust.

As a young man, Jim served in the Army National Guard. His time in service instilled in him a lifelong sense of patriotism that remained strong throughout his 87 years. That same dedication extended into every facet of his life whether it was his work, his friendships, or his walk of faith.

Jim was recently preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Pat (Ragan) Burris. Together they built a life centered around love and shared values. Their legacy continues through their children: Paige Burris and Brad Burris (wife Melissa), as well as their cherished grandsons Anderson and Christian. Jim is also remembered by his brother Steve and family; sisters Sarah Jean Hill and Martha Ann Pump, along with their families.

He was the son of Ruth and Horace Burris of Boone, NC, whose guidance helped shape the man he became.

Jim found great joy in spending time with friends and family especially when it involved a round of golf. He often spoke fondly of league play with the Nationwide Golf League, memorable trips to Myrtle Beach, and even rounds played on the storied courses of Scotland. Golf was more than a pastime for Jim; it was a way to connect with others and enjoy the beauty of camaraderie.

A man of quiet strength and deep conviction, Jim lived a simple life guided by values he held dear: honesty, loyalty, humility, and faith. He walked closely with his Lord throughout his life a personal journey that shaped every decision he made.

A joint Celebration of Life honoring both Jim and his wife Pat will be held on May 1, 2025, at 11am. at Trinity Baptist Church located at 4815 Six Forks Road in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Jim Burris leaves behind a legacy defined by love for family, dedication to service, and an unshakable moral compass. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.

I worked with Jim for many years at Nationwide Insurance. I can say that I´ve never met a more honest and pleasant man. Jim and Pat were friends and neighbors with my mother in Cary, visited often, and helped in her relocation to Greensboro.
RIP, Jim&Pat.

Dear Family, Pat & Jim had a special, close, loving marriage. I was a witness to their love when they lived at Morningside. May it bring your family peace to know they are in the loving arms of our Heavenly Father together. In Christian Love & Friendship, Darlene Nelson , Retired Hospitality Director at Morningside.
