James Cammack Obituary

Dr. James C. Cammack
Fayetteville
Dr. James C. Cammack, pastor emeritus, of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, died September 14, 2012, after a brief illness. Dr. Cammack served as pastor of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church from 1957 to 1987 and was the consummate pastor for the congregation. He had the tongue of an orator, the tact of a diplomat, the skill of an administrator and the concern of a loving parent. His evangelistic spirit, prophetic vision, and warm-hearted friendliness made him a man for all seasons. He was recognized in the community as a leader and example.
He was born April 7, 1918, in Dallas, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents James Chris and Gertrude Hart Cammack and his sisters, Carolyn Cantwell and Esther Webb. He is survived by his wife, Judy; his son Chris Cammack and his wife, Katherine, of Wilmington, N.C.; his grandson, Todd Cammack of Raleigh, N. C.; a niece and two nephews. Dr. Cammack was a graduate of Baylor University and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Prior to his thirty year pastorate at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, he served as pastor of First Baptist Church, Smithfield, N.C. and First Baptist Church, Rock Hill, S.C.
Dr. Cammack served as a Trustee for Wake Forest University, Campbell University, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He also served on the General Board of the Baptist State Convention of N.C. and was president of the Executive Committee of the General Board. His leadership roles in the North Carolina Baptist State Convention also included serving as president of the NC Baptist Pastors' Conference and chairman of the Board of Directors of the BIBLICAL RECORDER.
Always active in the Fayetteville community, he served on the boards of the American Cancer Society, Red Cross, Crisis Line, Hope Harbor Christian Mission, the Fayetteville Family Life Center and many others. He was the recipient of the E. J. Wells Cup for Community Civic Service given as its highest honor by the Fayetteville Kiwanis Club.
While Dr. Cammack served as pastor of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church over 5300 people joined the church. He was instrumental in the founding of Village Drive Baptist Church, Arran Lakes Baptist Church, and the Korean Baptist Church. During his tenure the church built a sanctuary and over 50,000 sq. ft of educational space. But far more important to the church than his accomplishments in the ministry was the fact that he loved and cared for the church family and unceasingly proved his concern for the congregation. And though he loved the congregation and this community, he loved God even more.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 16, in the Snyder Memorial Baptist Church sanctuary. The family will receive friends at 1:45 p.m. in the Gathering Hall. Memorial gifts may be made to the James C. Cammack Institute of Preaching at Campbell University School of Divinity; Campbell University School of Divinity, P.O. Box 4050 Buies Creek, NC 27506 or Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, 701 Westmont Dr. Fayetteville, NC 28305.
Sullivan's Highland Funeral Service & Crematory of Fayetteville is assisting the family.

I have many wonderful memories of Dr. Cammack. The most vivid memories involve his presiding over our wedding ceremony in December of 1963. The following spring we moved away. Many years later, I happened to see Reverend Cammack walking toward me in Southern Pines... when I approached him, he greeted me and called me by my name before I spoke to him. His counselling before the wedding was very helpful and still in use almost 49 years later.

With deepest regrets,

Judy and Family:

Jim Cammack was my pastor at my home church of Snyder Memorial all the while that I was growing up. Simply put, he led me to Christ and thereby ensured my etenal salvation. Even more simply put, there is no greater gift anyone can bestowe on another than that, and no man can hope to leave a greater legacy than this. I am a better man, both in this life and the next, because I had the privilege of knowing, loving and being loved by Jim Cammack at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church.

Mrs. Cammack,
Having just learned of Dr. Cammack's passing, I wanted to extend my deepest sympathy to you and your family and also my deepest gratitude for a man that was not only a part of so many milestones for me and my family, but the light that led me to the Lord. I grew up, like so many others, at Snyder Memorial and will always cherish my time there with the both of you. You both have a such a place in our family's heart and I know my beloved grandparents Don and Caroline Murray were some of the many who greeted Dr. Cammack as he entered into the gates of heaven.
The imprint you both have left on my life and heart is one I have and will continue to carry with me everywhere I go.

Mrs. Cammack,
Dr. Cammack played an incredible role in mentoring me with grace, encouragement and by setting the example of what a pastor should be in shepherding others as the presence of the Perfect Shepherd who knows his sheep by name and loves them unconditionally. Thank you for sharing him with many and being the one who heard his deepest dreams and offered your love to make them become realities. Jim was a friend to many and an example of Christian integrity to all who knew him.

I am praising the Lord for the life and leagacy Dr. Cammack has left to all that knew and loved him. What a huge impact he and his precious wife Judy have made on my life. I always remember the day he invited me to ask Jesus into my heart. He was right when he said I would never be the same. May his family be comforted in the Comforter in whom Dr. Cammack spent his life teaching us about.

Dr. Cammack had a profound and enduring positive influence on my life as I grew up in the church. He was the consummate pastor, and an even better human being. God has one of his most precious and dedicated servants at his table now and they are singing praises today/tonight. Our prayers are with your family as you move forward but we know that you too celebrate his life and passing in the way that God has designed.

Jim and Judy will never know the influence you made on my life while I was living in Fayetteville. My dear departed, Faye Everett Taylor, watched Chris grow up on Westmont Dr. He was not only my beloved pastor, but also a dear friend, upon whose wisdom I still depend today, forty+ yrs. later. Judy & Chris, Jim was the voice and face of God. I send my love to all of you. Frances Morton Ray

Heaven must be a littler brighter now with Jim Cammack finally home. I found him the most ministering pastor I ever knew, and in the footsteps of our Lord he accepted me as I am, with unconditional love for my soul. He never failed to light up my heart when he was in the room. Judy and Chris, and to all the family, I am so sorry for your loss, but I take comfort that someday there will be no more separation! We will miss him so much until then. But, how the angels must be singing.
