Jean Mincey Obituary
Jean LaOma Stell Mincey of Raleigh, died Friday, April 23 after a lengthy illness, which she fought courageously.
She was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Margaret Chloe Warren, her father, Thomas Major Stell, sister, Jewell Stell Cates, and brothers, Don and TM Stell Jr.
Jean was a life-long resident of Raleigh. She was an active member of numerous organizations helping many people, and was an inspiration to all who knew her. She received the JC Penny Golden Rule Award in 1989 for lifetime achievement in volunteering. The award recognized her 27 years of volunteer service to the Christian Fellowship Home of Raleigh, a halfway house for recovering alcoholics where she served on the Board of Directors, beginning with the home's establishment in 1962. Jean was an avid bowler, starting with duckpins in her teens. She was president of the Raleigh Women's Bowling Association (RWBA) for 38 years. In 1989 she was inducted in to the RWBA Hall of Fame, and in 1999 into the North Carolina Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame. Prior to her illness, Jean was also active in the Roylene Acres Garden Club. She retired from Wake County Area Mental Health in 1995. She lived at Sunrise of Raleigh on Edwards Mill Road for 3 1/2 years prior to her death, where she was lovingly cared for by her Sunrise family.
Jean is survived by her three daughters, Barbara Mincey Longmire and husband, Wilbur of Durham, Sherry Mincey Poole of Raleigh, and Carolyn Mincey Powell and husband, John of Apex; granddaughter, Megan Blodgett and husband, Chris of Norfolk, Virginia Tara Weaver and Leslie Poole of Raleigh; grandson, Rick Smith and wife, Jennifer of Apex; great-grandsons, Dylan, Marcus, and Jonah Blodgett; nieces, Sharon Norton of Raleigh, Diane Whichard of Knightdale, and cousin, Clyde Edgerton of Wilmington; special family friends include Larry Zieverink Sr., and the late George Goodwin.
The family will receive friends at Mitchell Funeral Home on St. Mary's Street Sunday, April 25, from 6-8 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, April 26, at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at Montlawn Memorial Park.
