John Gottilly Obituary

John Gottilly, 73, of Wilmington, died suddenly Saturday, February 25, 2006, at his residence while working in his garden.
Mr. Gottillywas born February 4, 1933, in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late Frank C. and Amelia Ruiggeri Gottilly.
John served in the U.S. Navy from 1953 - 1955 as a medical corpsman in Bethesda, MD. Later, he was employed by IBM as a manager and retired in 1992 after 37 years of service. A beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, he was devoted to and very proud of his family, especially his children. Known in his neighborhood as a "good neighbor", he was always willing to lend a helping hand. He also served as a volunteer for the Hospice Festival of Trees and lent a helping hand with Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Doris Rockwell Gottilly; a son, John Gottilly and wife, Sheryl; four daughters, Linda Greenhaw and husband, Larry, Kathy Davis and husband, Tom, Jennifer Saunders and husband, Jeff, and Patricia Roberts and husband, Frank; eight grandchildren, Gregory, Zachary and Matthew Greenhaw, Cameron Davis, Jessica Saunders, Melinda, William and Jonathan Roberts; a sister, Maryann Keenen; an uncle, Charles Gottilly, and cousins John D'Antonio, Roseanne Wells Gottilly, and Jo Gottilly Peabody.
A memorial service to celebrate John's life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at Andrews Mortuary, 1617 Market Street, Wilmington, NC 28401, with Rev. Tim Russell officiating. Inurnment willbe at St. Peter's Cemetery in Poughkeepsie, NY at later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in John's memory to American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216, Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center, 1406 PhysiciansDr, Wilmington, NC 28401 or to Alzheimer's Research Center, 15825 Grady Grove Rd, Suite 140, Rockville, MD 20850.
