It is not possible to put into words all of Lori´s brilliance, amazing skills, many loves, incredible accomplishments, the countless lives that she touched and saved, and how much she cared for all the 2- and 4-legged beings that were fortunate enough to share her life. But a recording of a Celebration of her Life that was held on Sunday, September 26, 2021 at the Chapel Hill Carriage House does capture some of these: https://youtu.be/4-lHtmWGnQk.
Lori was the most generous, warm, pure, honest and courageous lover of life that I have ever known. We shall never see her like again and I'm so blessed that I had the opportunity to share 37 years with her and allow her to make me a better person in doing so. So here´s to you my Lori Sue - rest in peace in a better, pain-free place, and I thank you for everything that you have done for me and humanity.

I love you and miss you Lori. I have known Lori since 1995 when I pursued volunteer opportunities in FDA and I got a chance to work in her department directly under her supervision. She helped me and guided me through my master´s thesis on creatine products. I have not only learned valuable lessons from her professionally, but also learned few things that helped me personally like how to help people. Lori and Fred have become personal friends to our family and every opportunity they got, they spent quality time with me and my family. Although I moved out of DC area in 2000, I have so many fond memories of them both since they always valued and made sure they spent time with me and every time I visited my family in DC area. My love and respect towards Lori remains alive for ever and I will keep making positive change that she instilled in me early on in my life. Rest In Peace Lori, we miss your smile.

Here's my favorite memory of Lori from our time together at FDA. Although we were from different disciplines and worked in different offices, we would sometimes walk together at lunch with other people from my office. On one of those walks we came across a transgender teenager walking alone. The other walkers and I didn't realize anything was amiss, but Lori immediately recognized that the teen was disoriented and might have taken something (suicide attempt or accidental overdose). She swung into action, calling 911, trying to get more information about what had happened, and waiting with the teen until help arrived. She may have saved a life that day.
This incident exemplifies the kind of person Lori was. She cared deeply about public health and also about the health and well-being of her fellow human beings, even strangers. My condolences to Lori's husband and family.

For this Celebration of Life, we were and will continue to be deeply captured by Lori´s wonderfully fun and intense give-and-take in her life of remarkable warmth and curiosity. Her gauge of involvement in commitment to her work and the world around us seemed unending in her innovative, lively, and truly thought-provoking modus operandi.
We have utmost heartfelt personal love and respect for her multi-dimensional abilities in encompassing empathetic and intense-/high-quality professional work throughout our shared working careers at FDA, her forever-giving to her community of friends and family, and tackling ancillary extracurricular endeavors in her remarkable glasswork craftsmanship and her perpetual advocacy and support for better canine lives. She engaged Life with a warmth of personality that radiated great love and commitment.
With an unexpected challenge wrapping around her diverse chosen commitments, we sincerely hope each of us will follow her lead in handling our diverse medical challengers as adroitly as she managed with impressive personal aplomb through many iterations.
We loved her immensely, and as our future days allow, we will endeavor to actively maintain our remembrances of shared times.......we have so many happy memories and pleasures from the myriad of gatherings at her and Fred´s home in Kensington.....to the shared moments in West Virginia, Kauai, New Mexico et al., traversing known and discoverable paths and Nature´s offerings along the ways.
It is our privilege to have been included in her and Fred´s Life. Our memory will hopefully allow us to hold onto that privileged respect and love for each, and will always treasure that special facet of human existence....the Excitement of Individuality....that is reflected in these remembrances. We simply were able to experience a deep and heartfelt friendship of the ages with Lori, which will not be forgotten.
With much love, respect, and remembrance,

Lori was a wonderful and talented person. I met her while I was working in Fred's lab. We had many beautiful memories together during my time at NIH. I often used to get advice from her on my pathology slides on Myositis. Even after I left NIH, I was in touch with her for couple of years. She was always very helpful . I was amazed to see her glass art work at her home.I was so happy when she gifted me a handmade glass brooch in one of my birthdays. It was a privilege to know her. I am deeply saddened that she is no more. May her soul rest in peace.

I am saddened to learn of Lori's death. She was a dedicated public health advocate with a strong Midwestern sense of ethics and hard work. She was a warm heartened champion of the downtrodden and a loyal friend to those who knew her and worked with her. She was always willing to speak "truth to power" even when it was "politically incorrect" to do so. It was a privilege and joy to know her and a loss to the public health community and her family and friends to lose her.

We have so many strong, fond memories of Lori- her brilliant career in dietary supplements, L-tryptophan, and myositis; her warmth and hospitality through the years with many wonderful, welcoming occasions; her artistic style and beautiful glasswork; her passions for gardening and rescue dogs. We admired her strength and courage. Lori touched our lives deeply- we lost a dear friend and colleague. Our deepest sympathies and support go out to Fred and to Lori's family.

Her innate kindness was evident in the way that she spoke about her community and her deeply felt responsibility towards others. She will be missed. I have so many mixed-up emotions. For much of my adult Life, my sister Lori and I lived pretty far apart. However, for the past ten to twelve years we lived much closer and this allowed us to spend more time together visiting and taking trips. I feel so fortunate that we had this chance to reconnect and really get to know and love each other. And so I'm
very sad that I will never get another hug from Lori or see her smile or listen to her laugh.
And yet, I've watched Lori suffer and go down hill for many years, and I'm glad her suffering is over. She was such a strong and tough person. I guess you have to be when you spend most of your life fighting an illness that won't go away. Even during the end, when she knew her days
were numbered, she was still fighting back.
But even though she was tough, she was such a kind person. I watched her go out of her way to help many people around her. The holidays were always times where her and Fred would welcome people to their house and make them feel part of the family. And Lori was always finding ways to make me feel special and loading me up with gifts and treats.
I still can't believe she is really gone. My heart will ache for a long time.

Dear Fred,
I am so saddened to learn of Lori's death. I remember Lori with fondness and great respect from those heady days of the tryptophan epidemic, certainly one of the most fulfilling times of our careers.
May her memory be a blessing to all those she knew.

I miss Lori very much. Lori was a true lifelong friend. We were friends since I came to GW University to do my Fellowship in Pathology in 1985. Lori & Fred were there for me & for my kids, in my lonely world, away from family & home. Our kids were ring bearers at their wedding. My family & I, were was surrounded by Loris love, support & true friendship throughout our lives, from there on. I considered her my best friend ever. We lost our amazing, loving friend, but Lori will remain in our hearts.
Our sincere condolences to Fred & to her family

Dear Fred,
Buddy and I are still trying to process your phone call to us Sunday with the extremely sad news about dear Lori. We werent surprised but never wanted to hear that news. You
Our first introduction to lori started off a bit rocky many years ago but after awhile we four became really good friends. We are so thankful for the friendship we established together. Buddy always says the good in people always comes out and it did.
Lori was the most amazing lady . With all of her knowledge, she was willing to share it even though she was often so ill. She
. Buddy and I always marveled at her strength and wondered how her body could tolerate all it did. Even with that she went to work, taught at GW , helped rescue abused pups, worked on her glass , along with so much more. She had such a kind and generous heart, and we will never ever forget that about her or forget her. It has been a great honor to have known Lori and to know you, Fred.
We are so so sorry you are without her now but know she isnt suffering any longer so we all need to be happy with that through our deep sorrow. We can only imagine the physical and mental stress all of this caused you.
We send you our love to you and the family , and please know that you all are in our prayers and thoughts and that we are grieving along with you.
Please keep us updated and call if we can help in any way.
