Mark Anderson Obituary

Chapel Hill
November 26, 1962 - November 25, 2010
Mark Keith Anderson passed away unexpectedly on November 25, 2010, one day shy of his 48th birthday.
Mark was born November 26, 1962, in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Dorothy and William H. Anderson. The family later moved to Winterville, NC, where his parents were both respected educators in the Pitt County School System.
As a child, Mark attended public school in Ayden, NC, graduating from Ayden-Grifton High School in 1981. Mark then went on to complete both his BA in Psychology (1985) and MS in Rehabilitation Counseling (1987) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During college, he was a member of the Army National Guard.
Mark dedicated his life to helping others in need and this was reflected in his professional career. Mark served as a rehabilitation counselor and a court expert on social security disability cases. Mark spent a significant part of his career as the Assistant Director of the Southwind Spine Rehabilitation Center in Durham, NC. His last appointment was as an employment counselor for the North Carolina Employment Security Commission in Greenville, NC.
Mark is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nicole Broom Anderson and his parents.
Surviving family include siblings: brother, Mr. Michael K. Anderson of Raleigh, sisters Dr. Michelle Anderson Massie of Gastonia and Dr. Sibby Anderson Thompkins of Chapel Hill, and half-brother Pastor William H. Joyner of New Haven CT. Mark leaves nieces and nephews: Victoria, Michaela, Christina, Trina, and Keke and Sam, Austin, and Howard Jr. Mark also leaves behind countless friends and close colleagues.
A Public Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, December 12th, 2:00-4:00 p.m., at the Walkers Funeral Home in Chapel Hill, at 120 West Franklin Street.

I met Mark during his time with The Census. He was so warm, friendly, and helpful to everyone. I was able to keep in touch with him for a little while after we left The Census. Unfortunately, I didn't find out till Christmas Eve that he had passed. I was so sorry that I had missed his Memorial Service. Mark was such a blessing to everyone he met. My prayers are for peace and happy memories to his family and friends.

I will miss you. I was looking so forward to working with you on our 30th highschool class reunion. I am selfishly sadden that we will not get to share that together. My heart goes out to your family and all your friends and for the Class of 1981 who will miss you more than words could say.

I was shocked to learn of Mark's passing...I met Mark in our graduate program at UNC, Rehabilitation Counseling (1986), and we became good friends... I knew Nicole well and was with Mark through those difficult times...he worked with me at Learning Services and then I stayed in touch with him while at Southwind and his private work... Although we had not stayed in touch in the last several years, Mark was an instrumental part of our masters program, a good friend, and an inspiration to those in the helping field. I will miss him much.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Mark. He was not only my professional mentor but also my friend. While I was in graduate school, I completed my internship with Mark at Southwind in the Spring of 1999. He was a great Rehab Counselor and served other selflessly. Mark made a difference in my life and I will always think of him when I enjoy a "biggie" drink & baked beans and listen to "Welcome to the Jungle". I miss you my friend.

My heart goes out to the entire family in this difficult time. Mark and I worked together at Southwinds 16 years ago and remained friends. Mark was amazing in his professionalism, he always made me laugh, he was my "bud" and I will miss him, his smile and his laughter.

The world is diminished with Mark's passing. I am better for having known him. To Sibby and the rest of Mark's family, you continue to be in my constant and continual thoughts.

Sometimes it's hard to find the right words to say when a loved one is taken so unexpectantly. My prayer to you is that God will keep you and give you strength along the way. Mark became like a uncle to me @ the Census Bureau & he will be missed!
