Mark Dunn Obituary

Mark Stevenson Dunn, Jr.
New Bern
Mark Stevenson Dunn, Jr. of New Bern, NC, and Meriden, CT, peacefully passed away on April 6, 2013 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He is survived by his son, Mark Stevenson Dunn III; his daughter, Letha Humphrey Dunn; his brother, H. Glenn Dunn and wife, Ann Reed Dunn; his sister, Julia Dunn Arthur and husband Louis Arthur; his sister, Nancy Dunn Longerbeam; and his beloved nieces and nephews.
Mark was born May 27, 1942 to Mark and Genevieve Dunn of New Bern. He grew up in downtown New Bern where he developed his lifetime love for historic houses. He graduated from New Bern High School where in addition to being an excellent student he was an all-conference basketball player and conference champion distance runner. Mark received his Bachelor of Arts from Davidson College, where he became a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society and was awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship for post-graduate studies. He obtained a masters degree from Duke University. As a U.S. Army officer he managed an oil refinery in Korea.
Mark's was an avid reader and enjoyed learning for its own sake. His active mind was usually occupied with creative problem-solving, math, statistics, and expanding his understanding of history and political science. His hands were often occupied with working wood as he restored and maintained his 18th Century home in Meriden. After retiring from computer research work at United Technologies, Mark volunteered his time at the Meriden Public Library and led the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance for many years.
Although he lived most of his adult life in Connecticut, Mark's heart remained in North Carolina. An eager and able body surfer, he returned regularly to the North Carolina beaches. In his last weeks he chose to travel with his son and daughter to his home state one final time in order to be with his family, where he finally succumbed to lung cancer. Mark and his family appreciated the understanding care given him by Hospice in Meriden and in Wake County.

Mark, our lives only crossed for the first 18 years, but my memories of our youth is still strong, from the basketball court to the library and the Parkway Drive-In, as I send my deepest sympathy to Rose and your family I never knew, God Bless.

I worked with Mark for many years in the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance program at the Meriden Library. He worked tirelessly improving the VITA program every year. The people he has helped throughout the years ask about him and tell us how much they appreciate what he has done for them. I will be forever grateful for Mark's guidance and friendship and will miss his many emails and his sense of humor. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
