Marvin Weisman Obituary

Marvin Weisman, O.D., 79, formerly of Rochester, Michigan died at his residence in Raleigh on Monday.
Born March 20, 1925, he was the son of Irving and Rose Weisman. A native of Detroit, he graduated from Southeastern High School and Wayne University in Detroit and Northern Illinois College of Optometry. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a B-17 tail gunner and radio operator during World War II, where he was stationed in Italy. He retired from practicing optometry in Rochester, Mich., after 41 years and relocated in Pine Knolls Shores, N.C. in 1991 and then moved to Raleigh in 2001.
During his professional career he was appointed by the Governor of Michigan to vice chairman of the State Board of Examiners and received an outstanding service award for exceptional service as a member of the Michigan State Board of Examiners in optometry from 1984-1991. He was President of the Michigan Optometric Association in 1974-75, and during this time was instrumental in starting the College of Optometry at Ferris State University, and served on the Advisory Committee. He also was a member and Chairman of four committees and trustee-treasurer of the Michigan Optometric Association, where he received the Key Man Award. He was past president of the Oakland Country Optometric Society, a 40- year member of the American Optometric Association, a member of the Better Vision Institute, and American Optometric Association Sports Committee.
He was the team visual consultant for the Detroit Lions Professional Football team for 21 years and was the first optometrist to check eyes in the National Football League.
He was past president and Paul Harris Fellow of the Rochester Rotary Club and received the Outstanding Rotarian Award in 1977, past president of the Rochester Shrine Club, member of Rochester Elks Club, member of Masonic Lodge # 530, member of Scottish Rite, member of Moslem Temple and member of the Advisory Council and Board of Directors for leader dogs for the blind where he received a Distinguished Service Award.
During his retirement in Pine Knoll Shores, Dr. Weisman practiced optometry at the Occupational Health Center in Cherry Point for ten years; was past president of the Morehead City Noon Rotary Club where he was presented the Distinguished Service Citation; was past chairman of the Board of Adjustment for the Town of Pine Knoll Shores for six years and was an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and Bogue Banks Country Club.
Surviving are his wife, Genevieve (Gen) Weisman; daughters, Kimberly (Kim) Max of Waterford, MI, Sheryl (Sherrie) Weisman of Farmington Hills, MI and Ilanna (Lannie) Kaplan and her husband Lawrence (Larry) of Raleigh; son, Bradley (Brad) Weisman and his wife, Denise of Wixom, MI; grandchildren, David and Brandon Max and Brooke, Jordan and Austin Weisman; sister, Joyce Borovoy of West Bloomfield, MI; aunt, Goldie Plotkin of LaJolla, CA; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jack and Lovie Sigmon of Hickory, NC; sisters-in-law, Jacksie and Ray Fox, Lana and Bernie McNamara of Hickory, NC; brothers-in-law, Rick and Carolyn Sigmon of Hickory, NC and Ron and Teri Sigmon of Charlotte, NC.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 8, 2004 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Millbrook Road.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.
