Mary Fisher Obituary

Mary Lou Fisher

Durham

Retired nurse practitioner Mary Lou Fisher, 72, of Durham and formerly of Baltimore, MD, passed away Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Duke Regional Hospital, Durham. Born in Woodbury County, Iowa, Ms. Fisher was the daughter of the late Rudolph Schulz and Lois Jauer Schulz. She is survived by her sisters Lorri Schumacher of Bay City, Michigan and Carol Malloy of Galveston, Texas, all of whom were raised with the assistance of their late beloved aunt, Mildred Lembcke of Hinton, Iowa.

Mary Lou's distinguished nursing career spanned fifty years and included a long list of nursing roles in hospitals in St. Louis, Virginia, North Carolina, and Baltimore. While working for the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and Samaritan's Purse NGO, she traveled to over 24 countries worldwide, utilizing her skills as a nurse practitioner to provide needed care to victims of war, natural disaster, and poverty.

Whether riding a donkey up a mountainous pass in a far-flung country, dancing with long-time high school classmates in Mexico, or quietly spending time with her children and grandchildren in the U.S., Mary Lou truly made the most of the time she was given. She will be missed by many around the world.

Ms. Fisher is also survived by former husband Gary Fisher of Baltimore, MD; daughter Heidi Fisher of Long Island, NY; son Atticus Fisher (Gretchen Fisher) of Stoneham, MA; son Doug Fisher of Richmond, VA; and two grandchildren, Davis and Elsie Fisher of Stoneham, MA.

Ms. Fisher's wishes were to donate her body to the Duke School of Medicine's Anatomical Gift program at Duke University.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 14th at 2:00PM at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Durham (824 N. Buchanan Blvd) with a reception to follow.
