Mildred "Mid" Furches, 90, died Friday, March 13, 2009 at her home.
Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 16, 2009 in Community Presbyterian Church in Pinehurst with Rev. Rod Stone officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow at 4:00 p.m. at Adaville Baptist Church Cemetery in Spindale, NC with Rev. Cal Sayles officiating.
Born August 16, 1918 in Spindale she was a daughter of the late Monroe and Ada Moore McDonald and wife of the late Douthit Lawrence "Doc" Furches and was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth M. Nash, five brothers, Fred McDonald, William Howard "Shorty" McDonald, James Monroe McDonald, Kenneth Tanner McDonald, and Billy A. McDonald.
She was a graduate of East Carolina University and was employed as a home management supervisor at the Farm Security Administration USDA (1939-1944). During her husband's Army career they lived in Arkansas, Utah, Maryland, Boston, Massachusetts, Alabama, North Carolina, and Yokohama, Japan. In Japan she was a home economics teacher. She received her Masters Degree in Clothing and Textiles from UNC Greensboro in 1962. Upon his retirement from the Army, "Doc" and "Mid" moved to Southern Pines, NC where he helped establish and direct the Adult Education Program of Sandhills Community College. She was very involved in and supportive of his work and in other community activities.
She and her husband were longtime benefactors of several educational institutions. They were dedicated to helping needy, deserving students receive an education. She continued this generous support after his death in 1994.
In 1996, her husband (posthumously) and she were welcomed into membership in The Order of the Longleaf Pine and Sandhills Community College Foundation.
Mrs. Furches is survived one sister, Hazel M. Crawford of Raleigh; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Billy (Marion P.) McDonald of Rutherfordton and many nieces and nephews.
