Nancy Foster Obituary

Nancy Rising Foster
Pittsboro
Nancy Lee Foster, of Fearrington Village, was born in Syracuse, NY and raised in Minoa, NY. She was predeceased by husband Thomas Allen Foster (Tom), parents, Dorothy and Lee Rising, and sister Linda Sperber. In 1959 she and Tom married and raised a family of three children: Eric (and wife, Jackie) of Saranac Lake, NY; Lee Anne (Lloyd) of Sanford, NC; and Ken (and wife, Jennifer) of Nazareth, PA. There are six grandchildren ages 6 thru 27.
Nancy loved her family dearly and guided each of them on their individual paths in life. She graduated from East Minoa High School and Cornell University before meeting and marrying Tom, who served in the US Navy. The family lived 20 years of their post-military life in Endicott, NY. She was active in local garden clubs and had a lifelong passion for crafts, cooking, social causes and grand parenting; and, was named Woman of The Year in Endicott, NY in 1991. She worked various jobs during their marriage including owning and operating a hydroponic plant business ("Green Scene"), and a number of years working for the SOS Shelter of Endicott, a safe haven for abused women. After retiring with her husband she moved to Fearrington Village in Pittsboro, NC and began a "bucket list" of travels and experiences which were the source of many happy memories. Between Wolfpack basketball games and numerous oceanfront encounters with Loggerhead turtle hatchings on Oak Island, NC, they were active in their community including volunteering time to assist with the Special Olympics, campaigning for local candidates, environmental issues, and serving on the board of the Family Violence and Rape Crisis services (FVRC) in Chatham County. During her long battle with cancer and treatment she lost Tom to his own battle with cancer in April, 2011. With her sincere concern for those around her, and her ability to make acquaintance and conversation with new friends at every opportunity, Nancy's memory is embraced and cherished by family and friends near and far.
A celebration of Nancy's life will be held at the Gathering Place in Fearrington Village, Pittsboro, NC on March 24, 2012 at 3:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be placed with the Tom and Nancy Foster Education Fund at FVRC, at PO Box 1105, Pittsboro, NC 27312.
